Chapter 1 - The Final Breath

The rain battered against the high Victorian windows, casting flickering shadows across the shattered porcelain on the floor. Ryan stood frozen, his chest heaving, water dripping from his dark hair onto the hardwood. In the center of the dimly lit room, his wife, Clara, was curled protectively over their six-year-old son, Leo. Clara’s knuckles were white, her oversized gray sweater trembling violently against the boy’s chest. Leo was pale, his lips tinted with a faint, terrifying shade of blue. Every inhale from the child was a dry, hollow wheeze that scraped against the silence of the mansion.
""Where is his inhaler?"" Ryan barked, his voice raw with sudden terror. He took a heavy step forward, his boots crunching over the sharp ceramic shards. ""Clara, where is it?""
Across the room, Eleanor Sterling stood completely motionless beside the gilded vanity. Her hands were folded neatly in front of her black velvet dress, her expression as smooth and unyielding as polished marble. Her dark, sculpted bun didn’t have a single stray hair, untouched by the panic tearing the room apart.
""She lost control, Ryan,"" Eleanor said, her voice dropping into the quiet room like ice. ""She broke the vanity set. She threw a tantrum while the boy was already struggling. Look at her. She is unfit.""
""She took it!"" Clara shrieked, her voice cracking into a raw sob as she pointed a trembling, accusatory finger at the matriarch. Clara looked up at Ryan, her eyes bloodshot, filled with an agonizing mix of terror and desperation. ""Ryan, please! Eleanor took the inhaler out of his bedside drawer! She slipped it right into her pocket when his chest seized! She’s letting him suffocate!""
Ryan’s head spun. The room felt suffocatingly small. He looked down at Leo, whose small hand weakly grasped at Ryan’s denim sleeve. ""Dad..."" the boy gasped out, barely audible above the howling wind outside.
Ryan turned his gaze toward his mother. Eleanor didn’t blink. She merely raised a brow, offering a calm, sorrowful smile that chilled Ryan to his very core. She reached slowly toward the pocket of her tailored velvet wrap dress, her posture radiating absolute authority. But before Ryan could take another step toward her, the antique surveillance monitor on the desk behind Eleanor flickered to life, looping a quiet, recorded feed of Eleanor palming the white canister into her pocket thirty seconds before Ryan had kicked the door open.
Ryan’s breath hitched. A dark, murderous fury ignited behind his eyes.

""Give it to me,"" Ryan whispered, the menace in his tone rattling the cold room.
Eleanor’s lips curled into a faint, cruel smirk, and she took a step backward toward the dark corridor.
