SILENT POISON, BROKEN BONDS / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Subterranean Path

The beam of Marcus’s flashlight swept directly over the seam of the false wall. Ryan held his breath, every nerve ending in his body screaming for action. Beside him, Clara pressed Leo’s head against her neck, muffling any possible sound the boy might make. Leo remained miraculously quiet, clutching his father’s torn denim jacket with tiny, trembling fists.

""Clear here,"" another guard called from the bathroom. ""Window is unlocked. They might have gone over the trellis.""

Marcus grunted, lowering his weapon slightly. ""Check the grounds! If they hit the woods, Eleanor wants the boy brought back unharmed. The mother... is expendable.""

Clara’s body stiffened in the darkness, a silent tear rolling down her cheek. Ryan reached out, his warm, calloused hand wrapping firmly around hers, squeezing with reassuring pressure. He waited until the heavy footsteps faded down the hall before whispering, ""Move. Fast and quiet.""

They descended the narrow, rotting wooden steps. The air grew progressively colder, shifting from the stale warmth of the upper floors to the damp, mineral chill of the mansion’s subterranean foundations. Moisture dripped rhythmically from exposed stone walls, echoing like a ticking clock in the cramped corridor.

After five minutes of navigating the descending labyrinth, the wooden planks gave way to raw, damp cobblestone. They were in the deepest belly of the estate—the original 19th-century cellars. Massive oak barrels, long rotted and empty, lined the alcoves like silent sentinels.

""Is the carriage house tunnel still open?"" Clara asked, her teeth chattering from the damp chill. ""You haven't been down here since you were fifteen, Ryan.""

""It’s open,"" Ryan murmured, scanning the low ceiling with his flashlight beam. ""My grandfather used it during the prohibition years. But Eleanor had the southern wing renovated five years ago. We have to make sure the structural supports didn't block the escape pipe.""

Suddenly, the beam of his light flickered and caught something unexpected on the stone floor. Fresh boot prints, wet with recent mud, tracked directly toward the service tunnel entrance.

Ryan froze, instantly pulling Clara and Leo behind a massive brick archway.

Someone was already down here waiting for them.
