Chapter 14 - The Edge of the Abyss

Ryan brought the truck to a halt fifty yards from the bridge entrance. The rain poured relentlessly, washing over the cracked windshield.

Ahead, Eleanor stood in the center of the road, her black dress whipping violently in the gale-force wind. She looked like a specter born from the storm itself, her hand holding a cellular phone to her ear while her men aimed their assault rifles at the pickup truck’s engine block.

""She’s completely insane,"" Clara whispered, her voice deadened by shock. ""She would rather kill us all than let us walk away.""

Ryan looked down at Leo. The boy’s breathing was shallow, a faint, terrifying whistle coming from his throat with every intake of air. His eyes were closed, his little body limp against Clara’s lap. ""He doesn't have another hour, Clara.""

""What are you going to do?"" Clara asked, terror filling her eyes as she looked at Ryan’s rigid, stone-cold face.

""Stay down,"" Ryan said quietly.

""Ryan, no! They’ll shoot through the glass!""

""They won't shoot the cab,"" Ryan said with absolute conviction. ""Eleanor wants Leo alive. If she wanted him dead, she would have had Marcus put a bullet in this truck five miles back. She is gambling on my fear. She thinks I will fold because I always folded when I was a boy.""

Ryan shifted the truck into four-wheel drive low. The transmission clunked into place with a heavy, mechanical thud.

Across the asphalt, Eleanor raised her hand, signaling for her men to hold their fire. She stepped forward, shouting above the wind, though her words were lost to the roar of the river below. Her face was twisted into a triumphant sneer; she believed she had cornered her wayward son.

Ryan looked into his mother’s eyes across the headlights. He raised his hand from the steering wheel and pressed his thumb firmly against the horn, letting out a long, deafening blast of defiance.

Then, Ryan slammed his foot to the floor.

The heavy truck lurched forward, its massive tires biting into the asphalt, surging straight toward the barricade with unstoppable momentum.
