Chapter 2 - The Stolen Cure

""Do not take another step, Ryan,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping all pretenses of maternal warmth. She dipped two fingers into the hidden seam of her velvet dress and pulled out the white plastic canister. She held it loosely between her manicured fingers, dangling Leo’s life just out of reach over the darkened drop of the spiral staircase. ""You step toward me, and this falls down the laundry chute into the furnace below.""

Clara choked out a scream, pressing Leo tighter against her chest. ""Ryan, no! Just do what she wants!""

Ryan froze, the muscles along his jaw flexing violently. The vein on his neck pulsed with dangerous pressure. He watched his mother, the woman who had controlled every aspect of his life until he had dared to marry a girl from the outer valley. ""He is your grandson, Eleanor. He is your own blood!""

""He is weak because of her,"" Eleanor spat softly, her dark eyes darting to Clara with undisguised contempt. ""A sickly heir raised by an unstable woman who cannot even manage his medication. Sign the full custody surrender, Ryan. Surrender the Sterling trust rights. The private paramedics are already waiting at the gate. One signature, and the doctor walks in with an emergency nebulizer.""

Leo let out a strangled, shallow cough. His small head slumped against Clara’s shoulder, his eyes rolling upward toward the ceiling. Clara began to weep silently, her forehead pressed to her son's burning temple, rocking him back and forth in sheer agony.

""He doesn't have minutes, Mother,"" Ryan said, his voice dropping into an eerie, trembling stillness. He raised his palms slowly, showing empty hands, taking half an inch forward. ""He has seconds.""

""Then you’d better choose quickly,"" Eleanor whispered, stepping onto the threshold of the staircase. ""Sign the papers on my desk, or watch your legacy die in the arms of a beggar.""

Ryan didn’t look at the desk. He locked eyes with his mother, reading the absolute lack of soul behind her gaze. He realized then that no signature would ever guarantee Leo’s survival; it would only cement their destruction. With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, Ryan lunged forward, throwing his entire weight across the hardwood floor.

Eleanor gasped, her eyes widening in genuine shock, and her hand snapped back toward the dark void of the stairwell.
