Chapter 10 - The Siege of Blackwood

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind Julianne, the automated hydraulic deadbolts engaging with a series of deafening metallic thuds.

"Lockdown! Code Red!" Lev barked into his tactical radio, his voice cutting through the rising panic. "Arm the courtyard turrets. Seal the lower blast shutters. All non-combatants to the secondary bunker below the wine cellar!"

Within seconds, the grand stone manor transformed from an aristocratic sanctuary into an iron fortress. Heavy steel plates descended over the panoramic windows, cutting off the pale morning light and plunging the grand foyer into the eerie crimson glow of emergency security strips.

Clara grabbed Mia’s hand, pulling her sister behind Silas’s towering frame. Evelyn, sensing the violent spike in adrenaline around her, began to cry—a sharp, desperate sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

Silas walked over to Julianne, who was curled on the marble floor, gasping for breath, clutching a broken wrist against her chest. Silas knelt down, his expression terrifyingly devoid of mercy. He grabbed her by the chin, forcing her tear-stained face upward.

"Talk," Silas commanded. "How did Marcus break the transport?"

"He didn't break it from the outside," Julianne wept, her voice trembling so violently her teeth chattered. "Your guards... two of them were on his payroll for five years, Silas! They executed the federal marshals the moment the van cleared the mountain pass! They took Marcus to the private airfield near Lake Placid!"

Silas’s eyes narrowed into slits. "And Grant?"

Julianne let out a bitter, choked sob. "Marcus shot him. In the shoulder. Left him bleeding in the ditch because he called Grant a useless liability. Grant is gone, Silas. Marcus doesn't care about the family trust anymore. He doesn't care about the company. He took the emergency contingency funds—thirty million in bearer bonds from my father’s vault."

"Then why come here?" Clara demanded, stepping forward despite the searing pain in her abdomen. Her eyes burned with fierce maternal fury. "If he has the money, why come back to this house?"

Julianne looked up at Clara, her manicured facade entirely shattered, revealing a woman who was truly, profoundly terrified.

"Because of Sarah," Julianne whispered.

Silas’s grip on Julianne’s chin tightened instantly. "What does Sarah have to do with Blackwood?"

"Marcus didn't keep her in Switzerland, Silas," Julianne cried, tears washing trails of soot through her foundation. "The Swiss clinic was a decoy! A paper trail to send you across the Atlantic if you ever started digging! Sarah has been here... in the old caretaker’s lodge at the edge of the estate grounds. Marcus kept her alive under medical care because she knew the biometric encryption keys to the original family offshore accounts! He’s coming to extract her before your people find the underground ward!"

Silas froze. The blood drained from his face, replaced by a cold, sickening horror.

Sarah hadn't been across an ocean. She had been three hundred yards from where he slept, trapped beneath the pine trees of his own family estate, while he spent seven years in self-imposed exile.

"Sir!" Lev shouted from the security console, his screen flashing with multiple perimeter breaches. "Thermal signatures crossing the northern fence line. Twelve hostiles. Heavy ordinance. They’ve breached the outer perimeter gate with an armored technical!"

A heavy explosion shook the foundations of the manor, sending dust raining down from the high chandeliers. The low rumble of automatic machine-gun fire erupted outside, muffled only slightly by the thick stone walls.

"Lev, take Clara, Mia, the baby, and Julianne to the subterranean vault," Silas ordered, his voice dropping into the terrifying cadence of a commander going to war. He pulled a tactical vest from the wall cabinet, strapping it tightly across his broad chest, checking the magazines of his automatic rifle.

"No!" Clara yelled, stepping directly into his path, clutching Evelyn to her chest. "Silas, you can't go out there alone! There are twelve of them! Let them take whatever is in that lodge and let’s get out through the extraction tunnel!"

Silas looked down at her. His gray eyes were dark pools of ancient pain, resolution, and something that looked dangerously close to love.

"I spent seven years running from a ghost, Clara," he said softly, his hand reaching out to cup the back of her head, his thumb brushing against her cheek. "I won't run anymore. If Sarah is down there, I have to bring her into the light. And if Marcus is out there... this family ends today."

"Silas, please—"

Before she could finish, Silas leaned down and kissed her. It was not a gentle kiss; it was desperate, fierce, and tasting of rain and finality.

He pulled back, looked down at Evelyn, and touched the baby’s tiny hand with his fingertip. "Protect her, Clara. She’s the only pure thing this family has ever produced."

He turned to Lev. "Move them. Now."

Lev grabbed Clara’s arm, guiding her and Mia toward the hidden steel door beneath the grand staircase. Julianne scrambled after them on her knees, terrified of being left behind.

As the heavy vault door sealed Clara inside the dark subterranean corridor, she caught one final glimpse of Silas.

He was kicking open the heavy side door of the manor, stepping out into the cold, rain-swept courtyard, his rifle raised, walking straight toward the burning gate and the sound of gunfire.
