Chapter 12 - The Price of Redemption

The sickening crunch of shattering bone echoed through the subterranean clinic as the tire iron connected with Marcus’s shoulder.

Marcus shrieked in agony, the syringe flying from his hand and shattering against the concrete floor, spilling its clear, lethal contents into the drain. The force of Grant’s desperate tackle sent both men crashing violently into the glass medicine cabinets, showering the room in jagged shards and medicinal vials.

Silas moved instantly.

He didn't fire his weapon. In two massive strides, Silas reached the tangled heap on the floor, grabbing Marcus by the collar of his ruined coat and hauling him off Grant with terrifying ease. Silas slammed his uncle against the reinforced concrete wall, his hand clamping around Marcus’s throat like a hydraulic press.

Marcus choked, spitting blood, his fractured shoulder hanging uselessly at his side. Yet even pinned like a dying animal, his eyes burned with arrogant venom.

"Do it..." Marcus wheezed, his face turning mottled purple. "Kill me, Silas. You'll spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security cage. You'll never see Sarah wake up. You'll never see that little bastard child grow up."

Silas’s knuckles cracked as his grip tightened, the tattoos on his forearm shifting with the lethal strain. Every fiber of his being, every trauma of the last seven years, demanded that he crush Marcus’s windpipe and end the nightmare here in the blood and broken glass.

"Silas... no..." a weak, hoarse voice whispered from the floor.

Silas froze.

Grant lay curled on his side among the shattered glass, clutching his bleeding chest. The gunshot wound Marcus had inflicted earlier had torn through his lung; pink foam was bubbling at the corner of his lips. His eyes, usually filled with petulant arrogance, were cloudy and fading.

"Don't... don't become him," Grant coughed, blood spilling over his chin. "Let... let the law take him. Sarah... Sarah wouldn't want you... to be a killer."

Silas stared at his dying brother. The boy he had protected as a child, the man who had betrayed him out of cowardice, was bleeding out on the cold floor, using his final breaths to pull Silas back from the edge of the abyss.

Silas looked back at Marcus’s terrified, bulging eyes.

With a roar of pure, primal disgust, Silas hurled Marcus away. Marcus’s head struck the heavy steel frame of the storage locker, and he slumped to the floor, knocked unconscious.

Silas dropped to his knees beside Grant. He ripped his tactical vest off, pressing his bare hands firmly against the sucking chest wound in Grant’s shoulder, trying desperately to stem the arterial flow.

"Stay with me, Grant," Silas commanded, his voice rough and strained. "Medics are on the estate grounds. Stay awake!"

Grant looked up at Silas, a faint, bitter smile touching his bloodied lips. "Look at us... the great Vance heirs... fighting like rats in a basement."

"Shut up and breathe," Silas growled, applying crushing pressure to the wound.

Grant reached up with his trembling, blood-soaked hand, weakly gripping Silas’s wrist—right over the tattooed date of Sarah’s supposed death.

"Clara..." Grant whispered, his breath rattling in his throat like dry autumn leaves. "Tell her... I'm sorry. Tell her... Evelyn deserves... a real father. Not... not a coward like me."

"Grant, hold on!" Silas yelled, shouting toward the stairs. "Lev! Get a trauma kit down here now!"

Grant’s fingers slowly slipped from Silas’s wrist. His head rolled back against the shattered glass, his eyes staring blankly at the flickering fluorescent lights of the ceiling. His chest stopped rising.

Grant Vance was dead.

Silence descended upon the bunker, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beeping of Sarah’s heart monitor.

Silas remained on his knees for a long moment, staring down at the lifeless body of his younger brother. A profound, hollow exhaustion settled into his bones—the realization that despite all the money, all the power, and all the blood spilled, the Vance legacy was nothing more than an open grave.

Heavy combat boots thudded down the stairs. Lev appeared in the doorway, weapon raised, flanked by two private paramedics.

Lev took in the scene in a fraction of a second—Marcus unconscious against the locker, Grant dead on the floor, and Silas kneeling in the center of the carnage.

"Marcus is alive," Silas said, his voice completely flat, drained of all emotion. "Cuff him to the pipes. Call the state attorney general. Hand over every ledger, every recording, and every offshore account."

Lev nodded solemnly. "And Mr. Grant?"

"Call the coroner," Silas whispered, slowly rising to his feet, his hands stained dark with his brother's blood.

He walked over to the hospital bed. Sarah lay there, still asleep, completely oblivious to the war that had just ended around her. Silas reached out, his trembling, blood-flecked thumb gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead.

She was alive. But as Silas looked down at her peaceful face, a strange, terrifying realization gripped his chest.

For seven years, Sarah had been the anchor of his rage, the holy ghost he was willing to burn the world down to avenge. But as he stood there, covered in Grant’s blood, the face that appeared in his mind wasn't Sarah’s.

It was Clara’s.

Clara, holding that tiny, fragile newborn in the sunlight of the hospital room, looking at him with eyes that had seen through his monstrous armor and offered him redemption.

Silas turned toward the stairs, his heart pounding with sudden, cold dread.

"Lev," Silas barked, spinning around. "Where are Clara and the baby?"

Lev’s face went rigid with terror. "They were in the subterranean vault, boss. But when the courtyard breached, Julianne broke away from the security team... and the vault door has been opened from the inside."
