Chapter 5 - Fire in the Woods

The sound was like thunder tearing through the cabin.

The reinforced glass spider-webbed instantly, holding together under the impact of the armor-piercing round, but the force of the strike sent the SUV swerving violently across the slick gravel road.

"Sniper! North ridge!" the driver shouted, violently wrestling the steering wheel as the escort vehicle behind them accelerated to form a rolling shield.

Clara screamed, diving over Evelyn, using her entire body to smother the infant against the floorboard of the back seat. Evelyn awoke instantly, letting out a sharp, piercing wail that pierced Clara's soul with raw terror.

Silas didn't shout. He moved with cold, rehearsed violence. In a split second, he reached beneath the front passenger seat, pulling a suppressed tactical carbine from its hidden bracket.

"Stay down!" Silas ordered, his voice cutting through the panic. "Keep her covered!"

A second shot hit the rear armored panel, leaving a deep indentation in the steel. The driver slammed on the brakes as the lead escort vehicle in front of them exploded into a massive fireball—a remote-detonated mine concealed beneath the dirt culvert.

The shockwave lifted the heavy SUV off its front wheels before slamming it back down into the mud.

"Out! Move!" Silas yelled, kicking open the passenger door on the leeward side of the ambush.

Black smoke poured through the trees, illuminated by the roaring orange flames of the destroyed escort. Silas grabbed Clara by the arm, hauling her and the screaming infant out into the cold, rain-soaked brush. The smell of burning rubber, gasoline, and ozone filled the air.

Two private security guards from the rear vehicle rushed up, weapons drawn, laying down suppressive fire into the dark tree line where muzzle flashes flickered like angry fireflies.

"They blocked the main gate road!" the lead guard shouted over the gunfire. "Sir, we have to fall back on foot through the ravine!"

"Take point," Silas ordered, his eyes sweeping the perimeter with lethal precision. He fired three controlled bursts into the ridge. A body tumbled down from the rocks fifty yards away, crashing lifelessly into the ferns.

Silas grabbed Clara’s shoulder, pulling her close against him. She was trembling so violently she could barely keep her footing on the wet pine needles, clutching Evelyn against her ribs like a shield.

"Look at me, Clara," Silas commanded, his face inches from hers in the flickering firelight. His eyes were wide, focused, and utterly devoid of fear. "Can you run?"

"I... I just gave birth yesterday," she choked out, tears of agonizing pain and terror streaming down her face. Her lower abdomen burned with excruciating cramps, the physical trauma of labor catching up with the adrenaline. "I can't... Silas, I can't run."

Silas didn't hesitate. He slung the rifle over his back, swept Clara up into his left arm, and pulled her tight against his chest, using his broad frame to shield both her and the baby. He drew a heavy sidearm with his right hand.

"Hold onto my neck," Silas growled. "Don't let go."

With crushing physical strength, Silas charged into the dark forest, moving through the thick brush and steep descent of the mountain ravine while his guards exchanged brutal, close-quarters fire behind them.

Bullets snapped through the branches overhead, showering them in wet pine needles. Clara buried her face into Silas’s neck, inhaling the scent of rain, gunpowder, and cedar that clung to his skin. Evelyn’s cries were muffled against her sweater, the child terrified by the deafening roar of the ambush.

They reached the base of the ravine where a narrow river churned violently against black boulders. A small, concealed concrete bunker—an old logging pump station—loomed out of the darkness, half-buried in the hillside.

The remaining guard reached the heavy steel door first, punching a code into a battered keypad. The lock buzzed, and the door swung open.

Silas carried Clara inside, slamming the heavy iron portal shut behind them. The guard immediately dropped the manual locking bar into place.

Silence fell—abrupt, heavy, and suffocating.

The bunker was lit only by a faint emergency red bulb. Silas lowered Clara gently onto a wooden supply crate, his breathing deep and ragged. He checked the baby immediately, his rough fingers carefully lifting the blanket. Evelyn was unharmed, her chest heaving as she whined softly, exhausted from crying.

Clara slumped against the concrete wall, clutching her stomach, her face sheet-white from physical agony and blood loss.

"You asked if you were just a weapon to me," Silas said, kneeling in front of her in the red gloom, his hands covered in mud and soot. He looked directly into her eyes, his voice raw with an intensity that terrified her. "A weapon is disposable, Clara. You and that child are the only things keeping me human."

Before Clara could speak, the bunker’s radio unit on the wall crackled to life with static.

A voice cut through the speaker—smooth, refined, and chillingly familiar.

"Silas, my boy," Marcus Vance’s voice purred through the speaker. "Did you really think I would let you reach the house? Look at the camera feed on monitor three. See who we found at the airstrip."

Silas surged toward the ancient monitor on the desk, flipping the switch.

The fuzzy black-and-white feed showed a woman tied to a chair in the airstrip hangar, a gun pressed to her temple.

It was Clara’s younger sister, Mia.
