Chapter 4 - The Fortress in the Pines

The private airstrip was carved directly out of the mountain ridge, surrounded by towering Douglas firs that swayed beneath the gathering dusk. Rain had begun to fall—a cold, needle-sharp mist that slicked the asphalt as the jet’s cabin door hissed open.

Silas stepped out first. His body immediately positioned itself to shield Clara and the baby from the open air. Two men in dark tactical gear stepped forward from the shadows of a waiting armored SUV, their hands resting near the holsters beneath their windbreakers.

"Mr. Vance," the taller man said, nodding curtly. "Estate is secured. Perimeter sensors are active. We intercepted a drone three miles out twenty minutes ago."

"Who owned it?" Silas asked, guiding Clara down the metal stairs, his hand firm against the small of her back.

"Unregistered civilian model, commercial signal," the guard replied, opening the heavy rear door of the vehicle. "Likely paparazzi tipped off from the church. But there was a secondary tracking beacon placed on the hospital transfer vehicle you abandoned in Manhattan. Someone is paying top dollar for live telemetry."

Clara climbed into the reinforced cabin of the SUV, her heart hammering against her ribs. The interior smelled of leather, gun oil, and rain. She pulled Evelyn’s blanket over the infant’s face to shield her from the biting mountain draft.

Silas slid in beside her, slamming the reinforced door shut. The locks engaged with a series of heavy mechanical clicks. The SUV surged forward, followed by a second escort vehicle into the winding mountain road.

"They have her DNA," Clara said, her voice shaking despite her efforts to stay composed. "Silas, if Grant proves she’s his daughter in the press, the board will freeze the proxy. They won't let you retain executive power if the paternity is contested."

"Grant doesn't have the stomach for a war in the press," Silas replied, staring out into the dark wall of trees rushing past. "He cares too much about his image. Julianne's family, however, cares only about control. That call wasn't Grant. It was Julianne’s father, Marcus Vance."

Clara turned to him, stunned. "Marcus Vance? He’s your uncle."

"He’s the architect of this entire family’s ruin," Silas said coldly. "Seven years ago, when my father died without a clear will, Marcus manipulated Grant into challenging my claim. He promised Grant the empire, but all he wanted was a puppet he could control through Julianne. When I began auditing the overseas accounts, I discovered Marcus had laundered hundreds of millions through shell companies in Panama."

Clara watched Silas’s profile—the hard lines of his face, the permanent shadow of exhaustion beneath his eyes. "And the woman you loved? What happened to her?"

Silas’s hands tightened against his knees until the knuckles turned white. "Her name was Sarah. She was the chief auditor for the firm. She found the ledger Marcus used to funnel the money. The night she was supposed to hand the evidence to the federal prosecutor, her car went off the bridge on Route 9."

Clara gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth.

"They ruled it an accident," Silas continued, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Mechanical failure. But I checked the brakes myself before the police impounded the wreck. The lines were cleanly cut. Grant signed the work order that allowed the car into the private garage that afternoon. He didn't cut the lines himself—he was too cowardly for that. But he opened the gate for the executioner."

"And you left," Clara whispered, beginning to understand the terrifying tapestry she had unwittingly walked into.

"I left because I didn't have the proof to destroy them both legally," Silas said, turning his head to look at her. "If I had stayed, I would have killed them with my bare hands, and Marcus’s lawyers would have ensured Sarah’s name was dragged through the mud while I rotted in a cell. So I spent seven years building an empire they couldn't touch. I bought their debt. I bought their suppliers. And when I found out you were carrying Grant’s bloodline, I knew the time had come."

Clara felt a sudden, sharp coldness in her chest. She pulled back slightly, looking at him with wide, guarded eyes. "You used me. You sought me out not to protect me, but to use my child as a weapon against them."

Silas didn't deny it. He met her gaze without flinching. "At first, yes. You were the missing piece of the trust clause. My father’s will explicitly stated that any direct grandchild would trigger an immediate liquidation of Marcus’s minority shares to fund the child's trust, stripping him of his board seat forever."

"And now?" Clara demanded, tears of betrayal burning her eyes. "What am I to you now, Silas? Just a vessel for your revenge?"

Before Silas could answer, the front windshield shattered with the deafening crack of a high-caliber round.
