Chapter 2 - The Scent of Treason

The heavy manila envelope hit the polished floor tiles with a dull slap. Grant gasped for air as Silas released his iron grip, coughing harshly and clutching his bruised throat. Julianne immediately backed away, her ivory train dragging through the puddle of crushed flower petals.
"What is that?" Grant rasped, his voice raw, his eyes darting between Silas’s impassive face and Clara’s silent silhouette on the bed.
"Read it, Grant," Silas said, stepping back to stand guard beside Clara’s bed. His demeanor was completely composed, hands resting casually in his slacks pockets, yet his stance radiated lethal authority. "Or perhaps Julianne should read it. After all, her father spent the last five months negotiating your merger under the assumption that you held the controlling interest in Vance Maritime."
Julianne dropped her bouquet. Her expensive diamond ring flashed in the sunlight as she knelt, tearing the red wax seal open with trembling fingers. She pulled out the legal decree, her eyes scanning the dense lines of text. The color completely abandoned her lips.
"Revocation of proxy," Julianne whispered, her voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "The board reconvened at midnight. The primary trust was never yours, Grant. It was contingent upon... upon the birth of a direct heir registered under the founding name."
Julianne looked up, her manicured hands shaking so violently the paper rattled. She stared at Clara, whose hand gently stroked the sleeping infant's cheek.
"You knew," Julianne breathed, turning on Grant like a cornered viper. "You dragged me to the altar, smiled in front of three hundred shareholders, knowing this woman was carrying the child that strips you of everything?"
"I didn't know!" Grant yelled, panic finally shattering his composure. He lunged toward Clara, his eyes wide and frantic. "Clara! You told me it was a false alarm! When I gave you that clinic check, you said it was over!"
"I told you what you needed to hear to survive you, Grant," Clara said coldly. The vulnerability in her eyes was hardening into something ancient and unyielding. "You threatened to take everything I had if I embarrassed you. You said you would have me committed if I stood in the way of your wedding. So I vanished. And I found the only person in this family who actually keeps his promises."
Grant stared at Silas in horror. "You... you brought him back? You went behind my back to him?"
Silas offered a thin, mirthless smile. "She didn't come to me, Grant. I found her three months ago, working double shifts in a warehouse diner to pay for prenatal care while you were vacationing on Julianne's yacht in Monaco. I paid her bills. I hired her doctors. And yesterday, when the labor began, I signed the birth certificate."
Grant went completely still, the air leaving his lungs in a sharp gasp. "You... what?"
"I signed as her legal guardian and acknowledged paternity under the patriarch clause," Silas stated with calm finality. "As far as the state of New York and the Vance trust are concerned, this child is my daughter. Which makes me the sole executor of the Vance estate."
"You lying bastard!" Grant roared, charging forward with a raised fist.
Silas didn't flinch. He caught Grant's wrist mid-air, twisting it downward with sickening leverage until Grant was forced to his knees on the hospital floor. Silas bent down, his voice chillingly intimate.
"Guards are waiting outside, Grant. You have ten minutes to return to that church, smile for the press, and explain why the wedding is cancelled. Because if you don't, the police will receive the financial records of your offshore dummy accounts by noon."
Silas shoved him away. Grant collapsed against Julianne, his chest heaving, his face contorted in humiliation and rage. Julianne ripped her arm away from him in disgust, tears of pure fury smearing her eyeliner.
"You ruined me," Julianne hissed at Grant before turning her glare toward Clara. "You think you've won, little girl? You think Silas Vance is a savior? Ask him why he really left seven years ago. Ask him whose blood is on his hands."
With that, Julianne turned and stormed down the corridor, her white gown sweeping behind her like a shroud. Grant scrambled to his feet, glaring at Clara with bitter hatred.
"This isn't over," Grant spat, backing out the door. "DNA tests don't lie, Silas. I will drag this kid through every court in this country!"
He slammed the door behind him, leaving only the sound of Clara's ragged breathing in the room.
Silas walked slowly back to the bedside. Clara looked up at him, the adrenaline draining from her body, leaving her pale and trembling. She looked down at her daughter, then up into Silas's dark, scarred face.
"Julianne was right about one thing," Clara murmured, her voice barely audible. "Why did you really come back, Silas?"
May you like
Silas reached out, his calloused thumb gently wiping away a dry tear track on her cheek. His eyes held an abyss of unresolved darkness.
"Because seven years ago, Clara, Grant didn't just steal the company," Silas said quietly. "He killed the woman I loved to cover his tracks. And now, I'm going to take everything he has."
