Chapter 6 - Blood on the Ledger

Clara’s world shattered in an instant.

She lunged toward the flickering monitor, her fingernails scraping against the dirty glass screen. "Mia! Oh God, no... no, please!"

On the fuzzy black-and-white display, nineteen-year-old Mia sat bound with industrial zip-ties, her college sweatshirt torn at the shoulder, tears streaming down her bruised face. Behind her stood a man in a black tactical balaclava, the cold barrel of a semi-automatic pistol resting firmly against her temple.

"She was so easy to find, Clara," Marcus Vance’s cultured voice echoed from the wall-mounted radio. "College dormitories have such laughable security. She thought she was being picked up by an executive courier you sent to bring her to the hospital. Such a trusting family."

Silas snatched the radio receiver off the wall bracket, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute murder. "If you harm a single hair on her head, Marcus, I won't just kill you. I will dismantle everything you have ever built, brick by bloody brick."

A dry, condescending laugh crackled through the speaker. "Save the theatrics, Silas. You spent seven years hiding in Europe, playing the exiled king. But you're back in my territory now. You want the girl alive? Here are my terms."

Silas didn't reply, his knuckles white around the plastic handset, waiting.

"You will walk out of that bunker alone," Marcus said smoothly. "You will surrender the infant to my extraction team. Grant will take legal custody as the biological father, the family trust will remain intact under my administration, and you will sign over your foreign equity holdings. In exchange, I let Clara and her sister disappear into South America with a modest stipend. You have thirty minutes before my man pulls that trigger."

The radio clicked off. The channel reverted to dead, humming static.

Clara dropped to her knees on the cold concrete floor, clutching her head, sobbing uncontrollably. The physical pain from her body was nothing compared to the suffocating terror tearing through her chest.

"They're going to kill her," Clara wept, rocking back and forth. "He’s going to kill my baby sister, Silas! And if I give him Evelyn, he’ll raise her in that venomous family... or worse. What do we do? God, what do we do?"

Silas hung up the receiver with eerie slowness. He did not look panicked. The wild fury in his eyes had retreated, replaced by an icy, calculated precision that made the hair on Clara’s arms stand up.

He walked over to the supply locker in the corner of the bunker, pulled out a digital keycard, and unlocked a reinforced steel case. Inside lay an array of encrypted satellite equipment, tactical gear, and a black military-grade laptop.

"Silas?" Clara choked out, looking up at him through her tears. "Did you hear what he said? He wants Evelyn! He’s going to kill Mia!"

"Marcus is a corporate predator, Clara," Silas said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he rapidly typed on the terminal. "He calculates every move based on risk and profit. Killing Mia gives him zero legal leverage—it only leaves a murder trial if he fails. He’s holding her as collateral because he knows his legal claim on the trust is crumbling."

"What are you doing?" she asked, crawling closer to the desk, Evelyn cradled securely against her arm.

"Seven years ago, when Sarah was murdered, I couldn't access the primary server because Marcus had local hardware encryption," Silas said, not looking away from the cascading lines of green code on the screen. "He kept the physical hard drives in a subterranean vault beneath his summer residence—which happens to be adjacent to the private hangar where they're holding your sister."

The monitor pinged. A high-resolution floor plan of the airstrip hangar rendered on screen, with thermal overlays showing four heat signatures inside the main bay and two patrolling the perimeter.

"You planned this," Clara whispered, realization dawning on her with chilling clarity. "The plane landing here... the route through the pines... you knew he would strike."

Silas turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto hers. "I didn't expect the ambush on the road—that was Grant’s recklessness, hiring independent mercenaries. But Marcus holding Mia? I anticipated it the moment Clara Vance gave birth. I placed two of my own operatives inside the hangar staff forty-eight hours ago."

Clara stared at him, stunned. "You... you used my sister as bait?"

"I used her as an anchor," Silas corrected, his voice devoid of apology. "Because Marcus thinks he’s hunting me. He doesn't realize he just walked into an execution chamber."

Silas picked up his sidearm, checking the chamber with a sharp metallic snap. He looked down at the lone surviving guard stationed at the bunker door.

"Stay with them," Silas ordered the guard. "If anything touches that door that isn't me, you vent the ventilation shaft and trigger the lockdown."

"Silas, wait!" Clara cried, reaching out and grabbing the hem of his dark tactical jacket. Her knuckles were bruised, her eyes wide with desperation. "Don't leave us. If you die out there—"

Silas leaned down. His large, rough hand cupped the back of her neck, pulling her forehead gently against his. The warmth of his breath smelled of mint and adrenaline.

"I didn't survive seven years of hell just to die in these woods, Clara," he murmured, his thumb brushing against her temple. "Stay quiet. Protect our girl. When I come back, this war will be over."

He pulled away, hit the release latch on the steel door, and vanished into the pitch-black rain.

Ten seconds later, the lights in the bunker flickered and died completely.
