Chapter 1 - The Trap Door

The heavy oak door slammed shut, echoing down the marble hallway like a gunshot. Elena stood motionless in the dim master bedroom, her bare feet cold against the hardwood floor. Through the tall glass windows, the city skyline gleamed like a field of frozen diamonds, completely indifferent to the violence that had just played out inside this penthouse. She reached up, her fingers grazing the swelling near her collarbone where Kevin had shoved her against the mahogany armoire. The pain was sharp, throbbing in rhythm with her racing pulse, but her eyes remained dry. Tears were a luxury she had discarded years ago.

Across the room, the vanity table remained scattered with cosmetics and overturned perfume bottles—a testament to his volatile temper. But her gaze wasn't on the mess. It was fixed on the leather handbag sitting innocently on the sleek marble console table. Kevin had picked it up, waved it threateningly, and tossed it back down before storming off with Victoria to celebrate their supposed triumph. He thought he had won. He believed that holding her signature over her head was enough to strip away seven years of her blood, sweat, and intellectual property.

Elena exhaled slowly, watching her breath mist faintly against the cold evening air. She stepped forward, her champagne silk slip brushing against her bruised legs. Reaching inside the bag's discreet side seam, her thumb found the microscopic ridge of the digital transmitter. It was still warm. The blinking blue diode was dark now, having transmitted every whisper, every insult, and every physical threat straight into an encrypted cloud server managed by someone Kevin could never intimidate: Elena’s estranged legal mentor, Arthur Vance.

Outside, the faint rumble of a sports car engine revved to life in the subterranean garage below. Kevin’s midnight run with his mistress. They assumed Elena was cowering in the dark, packing a single suitcase in utter humiliation, ready to sign away her life's work before sunrise.

Elena picked up her sleek personal phone, which had been concealed behind the radiator cover. The screen flickered to life, showing three unread messages from a burner number. The final message read: “Audio received. Audio clear. The board won't survive this if it leaks. What’s your play?”

A ghost of a smile touched Elena’s cracked lips. She didn't want Kevin bankrupt; she wanted him erased. She typed three words back: “Prepare the purge.”

Just as she pressed send, the penthouse elevators chimed. A soft, distinct ding that meant someone had overridden the private penthouse security from the lobby. The heavy brass elevator doors slowly parted, revealing a silhouette holding a dark envelope.
