Chapter 3 - The Broken Bridge

Elena didn't waste a second. Slipping the flash drive and her father’s letter inside her coat, she grabbed her sneakers and a dark trench coat, abandoning her luggage completely. She didn't need clothes; she needed survival. Sliding through the back kitchen pantry, she unlatched the fire exit that led directly down twenty-eight flights of service stairs.

The cold night air hit her like a slap as she slipped out into the misty alleyway behind the Sterling Tower. The city was asleep, drowning in grey fog and damp asphalt. Elena hailed a passing cab on the corner of 4th Street, giving the driver an intersection three miles away from the bridge to throw off any pursuit.

The St. Jude Suspension Bridge was an industrial relic from the late nineteenth century, its rusted steel cables groaning under the weight of the night breeze. It was here, eight years ago, that Kevin had gotten down on one knee, declaring that together they would build an empire that would outlive them both. She had believed him then. She had been naive enough to mistake ambition for devotion.

Elena walked onto the pedestrian walkway, the wind whipping strands of dark hair across her face. Her shoulder burned where Kevin had shoved her, but the adrenaline numbed the worst of it. She reached the central pylon, where the old brass dedication plaques were bolted into the stone masonry.

“Dedicated to the Pioneers of the River Valley, 1912.”

Her father had been the chief structural engineer who oversaw the bridge’s historical restoration a decade ago. He knew every crack, every hollow chamber, every loose brick in this monument. Elena reached underneath the lower ledge of the rusted bronze plaque. Her fingertips touched rough stone, then the cold, smooth surface of a loose masonry anchor.

With a grunt of effort, she twisted the anchor clockwise. The mortar cracked slightly, revealing a small cylindrical steel vault hollowed out inside the stone. She reached in and pulled out a heavy mechanical cylinder—the first cryptographic key.

Behind her, footsteps echoed against the wet metal grating of the bridge walkway. Heavy, deliberate strides.

Elena spun around. Standing twenty yards away under the flickering amber streetlamp was Kevin’s personal driver, Victor, holding a silenced pistol level with her chest.

"Mr. Sterling knew you couldn't resist a sentimental trip, Elena," Victor said calmly. "Drop the cylinder."
