Chapter 8 - The Cornered Wolf

Elena reacted on instinct. She grabbed the encrypted USB authenticator and the physical safe key, then ducked behind the heavy velvet drapes flanking the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows just as the master suite doors swung wide open.
Kevin walked in, his tailored suit jacket slung over one shoulder, loosening his silk tie with an arrogant grin. He didn't look like a man who had just ordered his wife's murder; he looked like a king about to be crowned.
"Pack your bags, sweetheart," Kevin announced, striding over to the bed and tossing an envelope of cash onto Victoria's lap. "Vanguard's private jet just touched down at JFK. By noon tomorrow, the contracts are filed, Elena’s shares are dissolved into the corporate trust, and we fly to Zurich."
Victoria sat frozen, her face pale as chalk, her eyes darting nervously toward the drapes where Elena stood concealed.
"What's wrong with you?" Kevin frowned, his eyes narrowing as he noticed her trembling hands. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Kevin..." Victoria’s voice cracked. "Victor called fifteen minutes ago. He said... he said there was an accident at the bridge."
Kevin let out an irritated sigh, waving his hand dismissively as he walked over to the vanity table—mere inches from where Elena held her breath behind the fabric. "Victor is an idiot who panics over minor complications. Elena fell. Nobody survives a seventy-foot drop into the river in winter. The coroner will write it off as a suicide caused by corporate scandal. It fits the narrative perfectly."
He reached for a crystal tumbler, pouring himself three fingers of scotch. "She built a brilliant engine, Victoria, but she forgot who controlled the steering wheel. She thought integrity mattered in venture capital."
Behind the drape, Elena’s hand tightened around the heavy steel cylinder inside her coat pocket. The sheer callousness of his words didn't hurt her anymore; it crystallized her fury into cold, surgical precision.
Kevin’s phone buzzed on the dresser. He picked it up, scowling as he read the screen. "What does Vance want at 4:00 in the morning?"
He put the phone to his ear. "Arthur, why are you calling my private line?"
May you like
Arthur Vance's voice echoed through the speaker loud enough for Elena to hear: "Kevin, you need to check the company's master escrow account right now. Someone just initiated an emergency patent freeze from inside your network."
Kevin’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the polished hardwood floor.
