Chapter 6 - The Architect's Secret

Elena wrapped herself in an old canvas tarp she found inside the warehouse, shivering as she caught her breath. Her ribs were bruised purple, but nothing felt broken. She examined the steel cylinder under the dim beam of her burner phone.

The cylinder was engraved with intricate numeric rings—a physical cryptex. Across the center band was a four-letter sequence: T-H-O-R. Her father's signature prefix. She twisted the rings to align the letters with the date of her mother’s passing. With a soft click, the mechanical casing slid open, revealing an ultra-dense solid-state drive and an old photographic negative.

Elena held the negative up to the pale moonlight. It showed a blueprint of Sterling Tower’s sub-basement—specifically, the original vault built beneath the city’s historic district during the 1920s. Kevin had converted that level into a high-security server farm, claiming it was for corporate data redundancy.

In reality, her father had installed a physical failsafe in the foundation walls before Kevin ever bought the property. Kevin didn't just push her out of a marriage; he had built his entire corporate empire on top of stolen patents her father had hidden away to prevent corporate monopolies.

A text message vibrated against her palm. It was from an unknown number: “The blonde is at the penthouse alone. Kevin just left for the private airfield to greet the Vanguard executives.”

The sender was Marcus, the concierge. Elena felt a cold wave of resolve wash over her. Victoria, the mistress who had stood smugly in Elena's bedroom sipping vintage Pinot Noir while Kevin threatened her, was currently unsupervised in the penthouse. And Victoria held the digital master token to Kevin’s personal safe on her keychain.

Elena wiped the mud and blood from her face with the edge of her coat. She didn't have time to hide in an emergency clinic. She had six hours before the board convened.

She walked out into the pre-dawn mist, heading toward the subway line. Kevin thought she was floating face down in the bay. He was about to learn that dead women make the most dangerous ghosts.
