Chapter 12 - Total Blackout

A deafening electrical screech tore through the sub-basement as the master surge suppressors tripped across the entire facility. Sparks rained down from the overhead conduit as the analog kill switch executed its protocol.
Every server rack in the adjacent room died instantly, the cooling fans winding down with a low, mournful groan. Above them, throughout the forty-two floors of Sterling Tower, the lights flickered and extinguished, plunging the multi-million-dollar monument into pitch-black darkness. The proprietary code—seven years of stolen algorithms, inflated valuations, and counterfeit patents—was systematically overwritten with zero-byte strings.
Kevin swung the wrench blindly in the dark. The metal collided with the iron bulkhead inches from Elena’s head, sending vibrations rattling through her teeth.
Elena dropped low, sweeping her leg across his injured knee. Kevin collapsed with a roar of agony, crashing heavily onto the wet concrete. Elena scrambled past him into the pitch-black corridor, using the walls to guide her toward the emergency stairwell.
"Elena!" his screams tore through the darkness behind her, sounding less like a powerful CEO and more like a wounded beast trapped in a pit. "You ruined us! You have nothing! You're nothing without me!"
She didn't look back. She hit the heavy steel door of the emergency stairwell, shoving it open as battery-powered emergency beacons flickered to life with an eerie amber glow.
She climbed the stairs two at a time, ignoring the searing pain in her ribs, the exhaustion tearing through her muscles, and the freezing cold that clung to her damp clothes. Every step upward felt like shedding another layer of the prison she had lived in for seven years.

When she finally pushed through the ground-level exit into the dawn light, the morning air was crisp and clean. Sirens wailed in the near distance, growing louder with every passing second.
Across the plaza, three black sedans pulled up to the curb. The Vanguard executives had arrived for their 8:00 AM signing. But behind them came four state police cruisers, their red and blue strobe lights painting the glass facade of Sterling Tower.
