Chapter 15 - Rising from the Ashes

The handcuffs clicked around Kevin’s wrists with a clean, final sound. As the marshals led him toward the elevators, he stopped beside Elena’s chair, his face contorted in bitter rage.
"You think you've won?" he snarled through clenched teeth. "The company is ruined. The stock will open at zero. You have no funding, no infrastructure, and half the board will resign by noon. You destroyed everything just to hurt me!"
Elena slowly rose from her chair, looking down at the man who had terrorized her for years. Her eyes were serene, completely devoid of fear or hatred.
"You never understood what we were building, Kevin," she said softly. "You thought the company was the building, the servers, and the stock ticker. But the company was the work. And the work is still in my mind."
She leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper that only he could hear: "Enjoy your cell. My father sends his regards."
Kevin was dragged out of the room, his incoherent curses fading down the hallway until the elevator doors swallowed him completely.
The remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence, watching Elena. She walked to the head of the table, stepping over the shattered fragments of Kevin’s forgotten coffee cup, and placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Elena addressed the room, her voice commanding and steady. "The markets open in twenty minutes. We will issue an immediate press release regarding the leadership transition, fully cooperate with federal investigators, and restore our core medical research patents to public non-profit trusts."
A senior board member cleared his throat nervously. "And who will lead the restructuring, Mrs. Thorne?"
Elena unbuttoned her cuffs, rolled back her sleeves, and looked out over the city as the morning sun finally broke through the gray clouds, bathing the room in golden light.

"I will," she said. "And call me Elena Thorne."
Behind her, her phone lit up on the table with a single message from an unlisted government agency: “The audit was successful. But we found something else in Kevin's offshore vault. Something your father hid before he died. We need to talk.”
