Chapter 1 - The Echo Behind the Grille

The air in the modern suburban kitchen suddenly felt thick, heavy with an unnatural frost that seemed to seep directly from the floorboards. Ryan stared in sheer disbelief at the white metal air vent grille, his chest heaving as the terrifying echo of his young daughter’s voice lingered in the room. Little Lily, who had vanished five long years ago into the cold statistics of missing children cases, had just whispered through the metal slats. Leo, clutching tightly to his father’s leg, sobbed uncontrollably, pointing trembling fingers at the dark aperture. Sarah stood frozen, her knuckles white as she gripped the wooden broom handle like a spear, her wide, horrified eyes locked on her husband. Ryan dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he reached into his pocket for a screwdriver, desperate to pry open the bolted grille. The metal was ice cold against his fingertips, encrusted with layers of old white paint that cracked under pressure. As he jammed the flathead into the first rusted screw, a sudden scratching sound echoed from deep within the metallic tunnel, followed by a soft, mechanical click that sounded entirely unnatural. Ryan froze mid-motion, realizing with a sick dread that the screws weren't just rusted shut—they had been welded from the inside.

Before Ryan could apply more force, a sharp, metallic scraping noise echoed from deeper within the ductwork, as if something heavy was dragging itself away toward the darkness of the sub-floor.
