Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Basement

Back in the kitchen, Sarah screamed as the kitchen vent grille snapped back into place on its own, locking from the inside with a heavy mechanical click. She dropped to her knees, clawing frantically at the steel plate, while Leo cried hysterically, clutching her shoulders. Realizing that the ventilation system was connected to the old, forgotten basement sub-level, Sarah grabbed the heavy iron poker from the fireplace stand and bolted down the basement stairs. The air down here was thick with mildew and absolute stillness. She swept her flashlight across the damp concrete walls, heading straight for the utility room where the foundation met the earth. To her absolute horror, the heavy iron crawlspace door—a door she had personally locked and bolted the day they moved in—was now standing wide open, its heavy padlock smashed to pieces on the floor. A draft of warm, foul-smelling air billowed out from the dark subterranean staircase descending into the deep earth beneath the house.
Stepping cautiously toward the dark threshold, Sarah aimed her flashlight down the stone steps, only to freeze as she saw fresh, muddy adult footprints leading down into the dark—and tiny, barefoot child prints walking right alongside them.
