Chapter 12 - The Architect of Pain

Ryan slid headfirst out of the side shaft, tumbling onto a cold concrete floor in what appeared to be a massive underground control room. The walls were covered in banks of glowing monitors, old VHS tape players, and tangled bundles of wires connected to audio speakers scattered throughout the entire neighborhood. In the center of the room sat an elderly, disheveled man wearing a worn mechanic's jumpsuit, holding Leo gently by the hand. Little Lily stood beside him, clutching a faded polaroid photo and staring at Ryan with expressionless, hollow eyes. The old man turned slowly around, revealing a face deeply lined with age and a cruel, knowing smile. ""Welcome home, son,"" the old man whispered, his voice dripping with malice. ""You spent years trying to forget what you built in this basement, but the house remembers every single brick."" Ryan stared at the man in stunned horror, suddenly recognizing the facial features in the mirror of his own memories—his estranged father, who was supposed to have died in a fire thirty years ago.

Before Ryan could lunge forward, the control room doors locked automatically with massive steel deadbolts, and the main monitor flashed a countdown timer indicating twenty minutes until total structural collapse.
