Chapter 3 - Blueprint of a Nightmare

Emergency light flickered on as the backup generator hummed to life, casting an eerie yellow glow across the kitchen tiles. Ryan held a heavy-duty flashlight beam directly into the dark maw of the ventilation shaft, illuminating layers of thick, gray cobwebs and tangled, severed electrical wires that pulsed with a faint, rhythmic current. The duct was far too large to be a standard residential HVAC pipe; it looked like an industrial conduit, stretching horizontally into the foundations of the house and branching off into labyrinthine corridors. Peering into the beam of light, Ryan saw the tiny yellow sleeve of a sweater twitch near a sharp bend in the metal. He swallowed hard, calling out softly, ""Lily? Can you hear me, sweetheart?"" Silence answered him, save for the low, mechanical hum vibrating through the metal walls. Suddenly, a small, pale hand reached out from the shadows of the duct, its fingers bending at impossible angles before retracting with terrifying speed. Sarah grabbed Ryan’s arm, her fingernails digging deep into his skin as she whispered that the house was never inspected when they bought it—the previous owner had been an eccentric architect who vanished without a trace.
As Ryan reached his arm into the cold metal tunnel to measure its depth, his fingers brushed against something soft and damp, recoiling instantly as a low, raspy whisper hissed directly into his ear from the vent: “You left me in the dark, Daddy.”
