Chapter 11 - Smoke and Mirrors

The cold rain hit Julian’s face like a volley of tiny needles as he burst out into the narrow, trash-strewn alleyway behind the diner. Jax was already pushing little Clara into the back seat of a battered pickup truck idling near the dumpster, its engine rumbling with a heavy, throaty exhaust note.

""Get in! Move, move, move!"" Jax barked, slamming the truck door shut after Clara was safely inside.

Julian vaulted into the passenger seat just as the back door of the diner burst open. The lead fixer stepped out into the rain, raising his pistol, but before he could acquire a clean target, Jax slammed the truck into reverse, tires spinning violently against the wet asphalt and kicking up a storm of gravel and mud. The truck fishtailed sharply before launching forward down the alley, leaving the fixer standing in the rain, watching them vanish into the gray labyrinth of the industrial district.

Inside the cab, the air smelled of stale tobacco, motor oil, and wet wool. Clara sat in the middle of the seat between the two hardened men, her arms tightly wrapped around her rag doll, her breathing rapid but silent. Julian reached over, placing a steady, protective hand on her small shoulder.

""You okay, kiddo?"" Julian asked, his voice softer now, stripped of all its corporate armor.

Clara nodded slowly, looking up at him with those haunting, familiar hazel eyes. ""Are we going to hide now?""

""No,"" Julian said, his jaw set in a hard, unbreakable line. ""We're going to finish this.""

Jax kept his eyes fixed on the cracked windshield, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. ""You're walking into a fortress, Julian. Victoria has judges in her pocket, cops on her payroll, and private security patrolling her estate like a military base. You can't just walk back in there with a rusty pickup truck and bare fists.""

""I'm not going back as a guest, Jax,"" Julian replied, pulling the faded photograph out of his pocket and staring down at Elena's young, smiling face in the dim dashboard light. ""I'm going back to reclaim what's mine.""

""And Elena?"" Jax asked quietly, his tough facade finally cracking to reveal a deep, aching sorrow. ""What about her back at the diner?""

May you like

""She gave us the weapon we need,"" Julian said grimly. ""Victoria's entire empire—every penny, every corporate merger, every piece of real estate—was built on a foundation of stolen inheritance and forged documents belonging to the family Victoria's father ruined to trap me in the first place. Elena kept the records.""

Jax whistled low through his teeth, glancing sideways at Julian with a newfound glint of respect in his bloodshot eyes. ""Well, I'll be damned. The corporate king actually grew teeth.""
