THE BITTER TASTE OF DECEIT / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Portrait of a Lie

The silence that followed Victoria’s approach was deafening, broken only by the distant ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the foyer. Victoria’s fingers hovered just inches away from the porcelain plate, her manicured nails reflecting the cold morning light. Her smile remained fixed, a porcelain mask of hospitality stretched thin over a well of rising panic. She tilted her head, her dark wavy hair cascading over her shoulder, completely aware that Julian was watching her every move with predatory intensity.

""How charming,"" Victoria laughed softly, a sound devoid of any genuine warmth. ""Allowing a stray child to dictate your appetite, Julian? I thought you were a man who made his own decisions.""

""A smart man listens to all available data, Victoria,"" Julian replied smoothly, refusing to blink. His hand remained firmly planted on the table, anchoring him to reality while the psychological battle escalated. ""And right now, the data suggests this toast might be more hazardous than my worst business competitors.""

Little Clara peeked out from behind Julian’s chair, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she watched Victoria’s hand draw closer to the food. The handmade rag doll clutched in the girl's arms seemed like a pathetic shield against the sprawling luxury of the estate. Julian felt a strange surge of protectiveness toward the child—a foreign emotion for a man whose life had been dedicated entirely to cold acquisitions and solitary power. He knew Victoria well enough to know she left nothing to chance; if Clara said the food was poisoned, there was a terrifyingly high probability that the child spoke the absolute truth.

Victoria’s fingers finally touched the edge of the plate. Her skin was ice-cold against the fine ceramic, a physical manifestation of the terror she was desperately trying to suppress. She looked down at the slice of buttered toast, then up into Julian’s unblinking, heavy stare. The eye contact was a duel of silent threats, a psychological wrestling match where the first person to look away would forfeit their life.

""If you're so convinced, Julian, why don't you let the child prove it?"" Victoria challenged, her voice dropping its honeyed sweetness, revealing a sharp, metallic edge beneath. She deftly slid the plate a few inches across the table toward him. ""Or are you simply looking for an excuse to accuse me of something you have no proof of?""

Julian’s jaw tightened. He didn't trust Victoria, but he trusted his instincts even less when they were clouded by suspicion. He needed to buy time, to figure out how Clara had gotten into the high-security perimeter of the estate, and more importantly, who had sent her. He reached out with his free hand, his fingers brushing against the cold porcelain of the plate just as Victoria pulled her hand back.

""Clara,"" Julian said, keeping his eyes locked on Victoria while addressing the girl. ""Where did you get that photo?""

The question hit the room like a physical blow. Victoria’s breath hitched, her meticulously controlled composure fracturing entirely as the color drained from her face. She spun around to face the child, her eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated horror.
