THE BITTER TASTE OF DECEIT / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - Dawn on the Highway

The morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a golden, cleansing light across the cracked asphalt of the highway leading out of the city. The flashing blue and red lights of federal squad cars illuminated the grand iron gates of the Vance estate in the distance, where Victoria was being led away in handcuffs, her empire reduced to ash and legal indictments.

Parked on the shoulder of the highway was Jax’s rusted pickup truck. Leaning against the tailgate, Julian watched the sun rise, feeling a strange, profound lightness in his chest. The heavy, suffocating weight of the luxury mansion was gone, replaced by the crisp, cool air of a new beginning.

Clara sat on the tailgate, swinging her legs gently while holding her rag doll in one arm and a warm cup of hot chocolate in the other. Jax stood nearby, adjusting his leather vest and offering Julian a slow, approving nod.

""Got word from the hospital down in the district a few minutes ago,"" Jax said quietly, stepping closer to Julian. ""Elena made it through the night. She’s resting, but... the doctor says she’s asking for you.""

Julian turned his gaze toward the horizon, feeling the old photograph burning warm against his chest inside his shirt pocket. He looked down at Clara, who smiled up at him with her mother's bright, hopeful hazel eyes. The past could not be rewritten, but for the first time in fifteen years, the future was entirely theirs to build.

""Let's go home,"" Julian said softly.

He opened the passenger door of the truck, helped Clara climb safely inside, and slid into the driver's seat beside her. As Jax roared the engine to life and pulled back onto the open highway, Julian pressed his foot down on the gas pedal, driving straight toward the rising sun."
