Chapter 8 - Echoes in the Booth

Julian’s boots felt like lead weights as he walked down the narrow aisle between the worn-out vinyl booths. Every step felt like walking through deep water, dragging behind him fifteen years of luxury, betrayal, and cowardice. He stopped at the edge of Elena’s booth, his hands trembling slightly as he gripped the edge of the scarred laminate table.

Elena didn't smile. She couldn't. Her lips were cracked and pale, parting slowly as she looked up at him. She looked past the expensive Italian suit, past the luxury steel wristwatch, and straight into the eyes of the young, desperate mechanic she had loved and lost half a lifetime ago.

""You came,"" Elena whispered, her voice a fragile, rasping breath that barely carried across the empty diner. ""I... I wasn't sure the message would even reach you through all that gold and marble.""

""Clara found me,"" Julian said, his voice thick with emotion he was desperately struggling to suppress. He pulled out the wooden chair opposite her and sat down, sliding his hands across the table until his fingertips gently grazed her cold, paper-thin skin. ""Elena, I... God, I am so sorry.""

""Sorry doesn't buy diapers, Julian,"" Elena replied, though there was no malice in her tone—only an overwhelming, crushing fatigue. She coughed softly, a sharp sound that made her entire body shudder, before continuing. ""I didn't call you here for an apology. I called you here because my time is up, and there’s nobody else left in this godforsaken world who can keep her safe.""

Julian’s chest constricted. He looked toward the front of the diner where Clara and Jax were standing by the door, watching them with heavy, protective gazes. ""She's safe. I have resources. I have power—""

""Your power is a cage, Julian!"" Elena interrupted, her voice suddenly spiking with a fierce, desperate strength that startled him. She grabbed his wrist with a surprising grip, her fingernails pressing into his skin. ""Victoria didn't send you that toast because she wanted to celebrate your anniversary. She sent it because she knows who Clara is. The moment I die, that woman will hunt my daughter down to tie up loose ends.""

The words hit Julian like a physical blow. The memory of Victoria’s terrified expression when Clara mentioned the photo flashed through his mind, locking into place with terrifying clarity. Victoria hadn't just been surprised; she had been planning to eliminate the threat before it even reached the doorstep. The cold, calculating monster he had lived with for a decade wasn't just a ruthless socialite—she was a cold-blooded killer.

""She won't touch her,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dark, resolute register that left no room for doubt. The corporate executive was gone, replaced once again by the dangerous, protective street-fighter of his youth. ""I swear to you, Elena, nobody will ever lay a hand on our daughter.""

Elena stared deep into his eyes, searching for the truth. Slowly, the tense lines around her mouth relaxed, and a faint, tragic smile touched her lips.
