Chapter 11 - The Rebirth of Touch

Clara dropped to her knees right there in the clinic corridor, oblivious to the dusty floor, her hands rising to cover her trembling mouth. Tears spilled instantly over her cheeks, washing away years of unacknowledged grief and exile.

"Lily..."

The little girl didn't hesitate. Whatever fears or doubts had lingered during the long flight vanished in an instant. She ran forward, her arms outstretched, crashing into Clara’s chest with all the momentum her small body could muster. Clara wrapped her arms around her daughter, pulling her so close that their breathing mingled, burying her face into Lily’s blonde hair.

"My baby... my sweet, beautiful baby," Clara sobbed, rocking her gently. "You're here. You're really here."

David walked forward slowly, his own tears falling freely now, unburdened by pride or decorum. He dropped to the floor beside them, his arms wrapping around both of them, completing a circle that had been broken for four agonizing years.

"I'm sorry, Clara," David whispered against her temple, his voice thick with remorse. "I was blind. I let her take you from us."

Clara pulled back slightly, her hands framing David’s face, her thumbs wiping away his tears. Her touch was warm, real, and devoid of the bitter anger he had feared.

"You found the letters," she whispered, searching his eyes. "You came."

"I will spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever stands between us again," David said.

Lily reached into her pocket and placed the wrinkled letter into Clara’s lap. "I brought your words back, Mommy. Nana couldn't hide them forever."
