Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Foyer

David didn't return to the ballroom to make a grand scene; he knew that silence weaponized against socialites cuts deeper than public rage. With Lily lifted safely in his arms, his trench coat draped over her frail shoulders, he walked down the grand mahogany hallway. The sound of clinking crystal and orchestrated string music drifted through the double doors, warm and deceptive.
Arthur, his father’s lifelong attorney and trustee of the Sterling Estate, stepped out from the library holding a glass of scotch. When he noticed the grim set of David’s jaw and the state of the trembling child, his smile faltered.
"David? Is everything alright? Eleanor was supposed to present Lily to the foundation donors ten minutes ago."
"Eleanor won’t be presenting anything tonight, Arthur," David said, his voice flat. He reached into his inner pocket and produced two envelopes, their wax seals intact, both addressed to David Sterling in Clara’s hand. "I need you to look at these."
Arthur squinted through his tortoiseshell glasses, his complexion paling almost immediately. His fingers hesitated before touching the paper. "Where... where did you locate these?"
"Behind the boiler, beneath seven years of clean sheets and dirty lies," David murmured. "Did you know about this, Arthur? Tell me the truth right now, because if your signature is on any document related to Clara's declared absence, you will answer to the district attorney."
Arthur swallowed hard, glancing toward the ballroom doors before leaning in. "David, I swear on my career, Eleanor told me Clara signed full relinquishment papers before disappearing into Eastern Europe. Eleanor handled the international couriers herself. She said Clara wanted no contact, no money, nothing."

Lily stirred against David's neck, her tiny fingers tracing the collar of his shirt. "Daddy... Nana told me Mommy was a ghost who only wrote letters to bad girls."
A cold rage flared behind David’s ribs, but he kissed Lily’s temple, softening his demeanor instantly. "Mommy is not a ghost, sweet girl. Not anymore."
