Chapter 12 - Truth Laid Bare

Over the next three days, the small coastal town became a sanctuary of reconstruction. Sitting on the veranda of a quiet seaside rental, Clara listened as David detailed the full extent of Eleanor’s machinations—the intercepted communications, the paid couriers, the forged legal declarations, and finally, the horrific discovery of Lily locked in the utility room.
Clara’s knuckles turned white as she held Lily, who was fast asleep on a wicker lounge chair beside them, exhausted from an afternoon spent playing in the gentle Aegean waves.
"She always hated that I refused to bow to her expectations," Clara said softly, staring out at the sapphire horizon. "When I wanted to use the foundation’s wealth to fund direct clinics instead of tax-sheltered galas, she saw me as an existential threat to her empire. But to do that to Lily... to lock a child in darkness..."
"Arthur has already filed the formal depositions with federal prosecutors," David informed her. "The courier service turned over five years of encrypted emails. Eleanor is facing multiple counts of unlawful imprisonment, mail fraud, and international custodial interference. Her attorneys tried to offer a settlement yesterday. I instructed Arthur to reject every offer."
"What will happen to the estate?" Clara asked.

"I don't care," David replied honestly. "I’ve stepped down from the corporate board. We have enough independent resources to fund our own lives, anywhere we choose. If the Sterling name disappears from every building in New York, it will be the greatest relief of my life."
Clara looked at him, recognizing the man she had fallen in love with before family obligations had hardened him. "We don't need an empire, David. We just need an open door."
