Chapter 15 - The Unlocked Horizon

That evening, a cool breeze swept down from the Green Mountains, carrying the crisp scent of autumn leaves and woodsmoke. A fire crackled in the stone hearth of the living room, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished pine floors.

Lily sat by the hearth, surrounded by colored construction paper, glue, and stamps. She was carefully decorating envelopes with drawn flowers and smiling stick figures.

"Who are those for, little artist?" Clara asked, setting down a platter of fresh bread and warm cider on the low table.

"For the children at Mommy's old clinic in Greece," Lily answered with complete seriousness, carefully licking a postage stamp and pressing it onto the paper with her thumb. "Because everyone deserves to get a letter from someone who loves them."

David sat beside Clara, pulling her close against his shoulder. He watched his daughter work with a profound, quiet gratitude that washed over him like a tide.

The letters that had once been used as instruments of cruelty, hoarded in the dark to divide a family, had ultimately become the bridge that brought them together. Eleanor had tried to bury the truth under locks and societal silence, forgetting that love possesses an enduring current—a quiet, stubborn ink that refuses to fade, no matter how deeply it is hidden.

Lily held up her finished envelope, beaming with pride. "Look, Daddy! No locks on this one."

David smiled, kissing Clara’s forehead before reaching down to ruffle his daughter's hair.

"Never again, Lily," David said softly, looking around the bright, open room filled with warmth and freedom. "Never again."
