Chapter 13 - The Collapse of an Empire

Back in New York, the fallout was swift and merciless. When the state supreme court unsealed the indictments, the prestigious Sterling facade crumbled under the weight of its own hubris.
Eleanor Sterling sat alone in the sprawling drawing room of the manor. The domestic staff had resigned en masse following the public revelations. The grand portraits of ancestors lining the staircase seemed to glare down at her in silent condemnation. Outside the iron perimeter gates, news vans with satellite dishes were parked bumper-to-bumper, their cameras capturing every delivery and process server.
Her phone rang continuously on the side table, but she didn't answer. The board of directors had unanimously voted that morning to strip her of all executive titles. Donors had withdrawn their names from her charity initiatives. Even her closest social peers had issued statements expressing "profound shock and sorrow," distancing themselves with practiced haste.

She walked slowly down the corridor, her footsteps echoing through the empty halls, until she reached the basement door. The heavy brass padlock had been cut away by investigators, leaving only an ugly, jagged scar on the blue-painted wood.
She pushed the door open. The laundry room was cold, empty, and silent. There were no letters left to hoard. No secrets left to control. For decades, Eleanor had believed that power was synonymous with silence and obedience. Sitting on the overturned plastic basket in the dim utility light, stripped of her titles, her family, and her dignity, she finally understood that all she had built was an ornate tomb.
