Chapter 14 - Learning to Breathe Again

Two months later, the Mediterranean summer gave way to a mild, golden autumn. In a small town nestled in the rolling hills of Vermont, far removed from both the noise of Manhattan and the war zones of Clara's past, a new routine began to take root.
They had purchased a simple wooden house with wide porches and an expansive apple orchard. The front door was painted a cheerful, welcoming yellow, and its lock was only ever turned when the family went to sleep at night.
Lily was thriving. Her cheeks had regained their color, and her laughter once again filled the rooms. The white ribbon that Eleanor had used to bind her hair was gone, replaced by colorful clips that Lily chose herself every morning. She attended a local school where her teachers praised her boundless imagination and gentle empathy.
One afternoon, David watched from the kitchen window as Clara and Lily harvested apples in the orchard below. Lily was perched safely on Clara's shoulders, reaching up into the branches with triumphant squeals every time she plucked a bright red fruit.

David opened his laptop to read the final dispatch from Arthur. Eleanor had accepted a plea agreement: five years of supervised probation, total asset forfeiture of the family foundation, and a permanent, lifetime protective order barring any contact with Lily, David, or Clara. The Sterling family name was legally dissolved from all public institutions.
David closed the screen without feeling a shred of bitterness. Justice had not come in the form of vengeance; it had arrived as peace.
