Chapter 10 - The Foundation
Rather than letting the memory of the crisis fade into mere corporate history, Marcus and Elena joined efforts to create a lasting legacy. Together, they founded the Clara Vance Child Welfare Institute, dedicated to providing early childhood education, healthcare, and safe shelter for orphaned and displaced children across the state.
Elena served as the program director, refusing an administrative corner office in Manhattan to work directly on-site at the community centers.
One afternoon, Marcus visited the newly opened facility in Brooklyn. He stood in the doorway of the reading room, watching Elena sit on a braided rug surrounded by twenty children from underprivileged neighborhoods, reading them stories with the same patience and warmth she gave Theo.
Harrison, who had quietly retired from the Vance Industries board after the shareholder summit, unexpectedly joined Marcus in the hallway. The older man looked subdued, leaning heavily on his cane.
"I called her a nobody," Harrison murmured, looking through the glass at Elena. "I spent sixty years believing that the only people who mattered were those whose names were printed on municipal buildings."

Harrison sighed, placing a frail hand on Marcus’s shoulder. "Your father would have been proud of the man you’ve become, Marcus. And Clara... Clara chose well when she asked that young lady to watch over your son."
