Chapter 13 - A Lesson in Grace
Two days after the incident, Marcus sat with the district attorney, prepared to press charges that would ensure Victoria spent years behind bars for harassment and violating court orders.
Elena entered the study and sat across from him. "Marcus, don't send her to prison."
Marcus looked up, bewildered. "Elena, she threatened you. She refuses to let go of her hatred. The law must run its course."
"Prison will only validate her bitterness," Elena argued gently. "She will spend years convincing herself that she is the victim of our cruelty. True justice should teach, not merely punish."
Marcus leaned back, searching Elena’s face. "What do you propose?"
"Her grandmother’s foundation runs an agricultural retreat and rehabilitation community upstate," Elena said. "Condition her probation on two years of mandatory residence and labor there, without access to media, trust funds, or social galas. Let her work the soil. Let her learn what it takes to nurture life instead of demanding it serve her."
Marcus stared at Elena, amazed by the depth of her mercy. "After everything she did to Theo? After what she tried to do to you?"

"Forgiveness isn't about excusing what she did," Elena whispered. "It's about refusing to let her malice dictate our hearts. If we answer cruelty with vengeance, we become the very thing we fought against."
Marcus nodded slowly, taking Elena’s hand and pressing it to his lips. "You make me a better man every single day."
