Chapter 4 - The Heart of the House

Back at the estate, the grandeur of the mansion felt warmer, stripped of Victoria’s suffocating vanity. Theo sat on an embroidered rug in the sun-drenched conservatory, stacking colorful wooden blocks.

Elena knelt beside him, patiently catching the blocks whenever the tower collapsed, rewarding each attempt with gentle laughter that brought an infectious smile to the baby's face.

Marcus stood by the glass door, watching them in silence. For the past year, since his wife Clara had succumbed to an aggressive illness, this home had felt more like a museum of grief than a residence. Every antique clock ticked too loudly; every marble hallway seemed cold. Yet watching Elena with Theo, Marcus felt a gentle warmth returning to the space.

"He trusts you completely," Marcus said softly, stepping into the conservatory.

Elena looked up, adjusting Theo's collar. "Children know when someone is truly present, Mr. Vance. They do not care about velvet dresses or grand titles. They only want to feel safe."

Marcus sat down on a nearby wicker chair, loosening his tie. "You did not flinch yesterday, Elena. When she insulted you, when she threatened your livelihood, you stayed between her and Theo. Why?"

Elena paused, her fingers lightly smoothing Theo’s hair. "I grew up in an orphanage in Manila before my adoptive family brought me to Ohio. I know what it feels like to be vulnerable, Mr. Vance. When an innocent is abandoned or treated like an inconvenience, it leaves a scar that time cannot easily heal. A job is replaceable. A child’s safety is not."

Marcus looked at her, realizing that beneath her modest exterior lay a resilience forged in fire. For the first time in months, he felt an emotion other than duty and grief: profound respect.
