Chapter 6 - An Unspoken Bond

That night, the mansion was quiet, but the air remained charged with residual unease. Elena sat in the kitchen, nursing a mug of herbal tea, her hands still faintly unsteady from the intrusion.

The door swung open, and Marcus entered, carrying no pretenses of the untouchable CEO. He poured himself a glass of water and sat opposite her at the heavy kitchen table.

"I apologize, Elena," he said, looking at his hands. "My world is volatile. I thought hiring top security was enough to build a sanctuary for Theo, but my family's circle brings danger to anyone who steps inside it."

"You don't need to apologize for other people's malice, Mr. Vance," Elena replied quietly. "Greed creates its own storms. You are merely protecting your child from getting swept away."

Marcus looked up, his gaze holding hers. "You could have walked away. After what happened with Victoria, after tonight—no one would blame you for leaving to find a quieter life."

"I made a promise to Mrs. Vance before she passed," Elena confessed softly, a faint smile touching her lips. "I was her nurse during her final weeks, before you asked me to look after Theo full-time. She held my hand and said, 'Make sure my boy grows up knowing what truly matters, not just what things cost.' I don't break promises."

Marcus closed his eyes, a profound weight pressing on his chest. In Clara’s final days, he had been buried under grief and corporate obligations, blind to the quiet pact made between two extraordinary women. Elena was not merely an employee; she was the living guardian of Clara’s final wish.

"Thank you, Elena," Marcus whispered, the vulnerability in his voice unshielded. "For everything."
