Chapter 2 - Behind the Security Glass

The study smelled of aged mahogany, pipe tobacco from Marcus’s grandfather, and rain. The only light emanated from three ultra-high-definition monitors sitting on the desk. Marcus sat upright, his expression an unreadable slab of granite. Victoria stood near the bookshelf, nervously twisting the heavy diamond ring on her finger. Elena waited near the door, Theo sleeping fitfully in her arms after being given a clean bill of initial health by the estate’s resident physician.

Marcus clicked the mouse. The ballroom surveillance video loaded with devastating clarity.

The screen revealed Victoria taking Theo from Elena's arms under the guise of showing him to the guests. Elena had hesitated, clearly polite yet cautious. Then, as the laughter swelled across the hall, Victoria had deliberately released her grip, taking half a step backward with cruel precision, letting the baby tumble to the ground. Then came the audio feed, crisp and damning:

"Who do you think he’ll believe? His future wife... or a cheap nanny?"

The sentence echoed through the room like a gunshot.

Victoria gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth. "Marcus... I—it was an accident, I slipped, I was only joking with her, she provoked me—"

"Get out," Marcus said. His voice was barely above a whisper, yet it carried an authority that brooked no debate.

"Marcus, think about the merger! Think about the Sterling-Vance foundation! Our families have bound our names together for decades!" Her poise dissolved into desperate, frantic pleading. "You cannot throw me out into the street over an exaggerated misunderstanding!"

"You endangered my son to satisfy a petty ego," Marcus replied, his eyes never leaving the screen where his child fell in endless digital repetition. "You consider people disposable. In this house, nobody is disposable. Security has already packed your belongings. Your car is at the gate."

Victoria glared at Elena, her eyes filled with venomous malice. "You will regret this, you pathetic little maid. You will leave this town with nothing."

Elena met her gaze evenly, without arrogance, only a quiet sorrow for the hollow desperation of a woman who had everything yet owned nothing of substance. When the security guards escorted Victoria out, the heavy oak doors shut with an absolute finality.
