Chapter 11 - Awakening

The smell of sterile antiseptic and the steady, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor slowly pulled Julian back to consciousness. He opened his eyes, squinting against the soft, warm light filtering through the linen curtains of a private hospital room.
Pain radiated across his ribs and skull, but the numbness that had lived in his soul for four long years was entirely gone.
Sitting on the edge of the mattress, her small legs swinging rhythmically, was Lily. She was wearing clean hospital-issue pajamas with little yellow stars, holding a sketchbook and a red crayon. Beside her sat Eleanor, her arm in a neat sling, her face bandaged but glowing with a peacefulness she hadn't known in half a decade.
""He's awake,"" Lily whispered excitedly, dropping her crayon and leaning over Julian's chest with extreme care, remembering the nurse's instructions not to press on his bandages.
Julian managed a faint, bruised smile, his hand rising slowly to cup her small cheek. Her skin was warm, real, and alive. ""Hey there, little bird.""
""You took a really long nap,"" Lily said, pouting slightly with exaggerated concern. ""The doctor said you have three cracked ribs, but I told him you're too strong to stay broken.""
Eleanor smiled softly, reaching over to touch Julian’s forearm. ""The Federal Bureau took over the case two hours after the crash. Victoria and Arthur are in custody at a federal detention center. The evidence Marcus recovered from Arthur’s briefcase contained four years of financial paper trails, payments to offshore hitmen, and Evelyn’s original will.""
""And the Vance board?"" Julian asked, his voice rough.
""Every single conspirator was arrested at dawn,"" Eleanor replied, her voice tinged with quiet triumph. ""The board is dismantled. The empire is yours, completely and uncontested. But more importantly... you have your daughter back, Julian.""
Julian looked at Lily. The girl held up her sketchbook. On the rough paper was a drawing of a large house with flowers, three stick figures holding hands, and a bright, yellow sun.
""Is this our new home?"" Lily asked, pointing to the drawing with wide, expectant hazel eyes.
Julian felt a tear slip down his cheek, the first tear of genuine joy he had shed in what felt like a lifetime. ""Yes, my love. That’s our home. And no one will ever take it from us again.""

Just then, Marcus stepped into the hospital room, his expression grave despite the victory. He closed the door firmly and stepped toward Julian’s bedside.
""Sir,"" Marcus spoke in a hushed, urgent tone. ""We just received the preliminary autopsy reports on Evelyn’s yacht from four years ago... and there’s something you need to see.""
