Chapter 6 - Bloodline of Betrayal

The voice on the radio was unmistakably that of Victoria Vance. Cultured, icy, and entirely devoid of human empathy. Julian stood frozen in the middle of the darkened kitchen, his fingers tightening around the radio unit until the plastic casing groaned under the pressure.

All those years ago, when Evelyn’s yacht had exploded, it was Victoria who had organized the memorial. It was Victoria who had wiped his tears, told him that God had taken his family for a greater purpose, and urged him to take over the Vance Global conglomerate to channel his grief into power. It had all been an orchestrated slaughter to consolidate corporate control.

""Team leader, status now,"" Victoria's voice hissed again through the static. ""The storm won't cover our tracks for much longer. Eliminate Julian if he resists. The company cannot survive a reopening of the probate court.""

Julian depressed the transmission button, his voice dropping into a register of glacial certainty. ""You won't survive the sunrise, Mother.""

A sharp intake of breath sounded from the speaker, followed by dead silence as Victoria severed the link.

""Sir,"" Clara whispered, stepping into the kitchen with tears streaming down her pale cheeks. ""What do we do? The front gates are blocked, and I hear vehicles approaching the courtyard.""

""Marcus is securing Eleanor in the wine cellar bunker,"" Julian said, lifting Lily into his arms. The little girl wrapped her thin arms around his neck, burying her face into his wet collar. She didn't tremble; she clung to him with an instinctive trust that pierced straight through Julian's hardened heart. ""We're going underground. Follow me.""

Julian led them through the servant corridors toward the library. The Vance estate had been built in the nineteenth century, riddled with secret passageways designed for prohibition and smuggling. He pressed an ornate carving on the library mantelpiece, and a heavy bookshelf swung backward, revealing a narrow staircase descending into the dark foundation of the mansion.

""Go down, Clara. Stay behind the iron door until I come for you,"" Julian commanded.

""What about you, Mr. Vance?"" Clara asked, clutching the wooden handrail.

""I need to settle an old debt,"" Julian replied, handing Lily gently to Clara.

Lily pulled back, her big hazel eyes searching his face. ""Daddy... don't leave like Mommy said you did.""

Julian froze. Daddy. The word washed over him like a tidal wave, shattering four years of numbness. He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing a tear from her cheek.

May you like

""I will never leave you again, Lily,"" Julian swore softly. ""I promise.""

He sealed the heavy iron door behind them, turned back toward the grand foyer, and chambered a round into his rifle. Through the stained-glass entrance, the headlights of three black armored SUVs illuminated the rain-slicked courtyard.
