Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Dark

The manor became a labyrinth of pitch-black corridors, illuminated only by intermittent flashes of lightning that cast jagged, monstrous shadows against the antique tapestries. Julian slipped through the dining terrace doors, his wet shoes squeaking softly on the marble. He moved like a phantom, guided by pure paternal instinct and a rage he had never felt before.
Gunfire rattled from the southern wing. The hired mercenaries were systematic, sweeping room by room. They hadn't come just to intimidate; they had come to tie up loose ends.
""Lily!"" Julian whispered hoarsely, stepping carefully over the shattered glass of the dining room.
The table was abandoned. The candles had been blown out by the draft from the broken doors. In the dim glow of the stormy sky, Julian saw the silver plate, the overturned chair, and the golden spoon lying on the Persian rug.
""Lily?"" he called again, louder this time.
A faint scuffle came from the pantry at the far end of the room. Julian drew a small combat knife from the ornamental armor mounted on the wall and moved silently toward the sound. He pushed the heavy oak door open with the flat of his boot.
Inside, curled behind a stack of silver platters, Clara was huddled on the floor, her arms wrapped tightly around Lily. The young maid was sobbing silently, trembling so violently that her teeth chattered.
Lily looked up. When she saw Julian, she didn't cry. Instead, she pointed toward the high air vent on the opposite wall.
""There's a man with a red light on his gun climbing down the stairs,"" the little girl whispered, her tone chillingly calm for a five-year-old.
Julian’s blood ran cold. He spun around, pushing Clara and Lily behind the metal shelves just as a crimson laser dot swept across the pantry doorframe. A masked operative stepped into the kitchen, his suppressed rifle raised.
Julian lunged forward without hesitation, knocking the rifle's barrel aside just as a muffled round discharged into the drywall. The two men collided against the stainless-steel prep tables in a brutal, silent struggle. Julian slammed his elbow into the operative's visor, cracking the glass, then drove the intruder back-first onto a heavy butcher's block.
With a final, desperate shove, Julian disarmed the man and brought the heavy hilt of the weapon down across his temple, knocking him unconscious.
Panting heavily, Julian grabbed the rifle, adjusted the sling around his shoulder, and turned back to the pantry.
""We have to move,"" Julian said, offering his hand to Lily.
Lily stepped out from behind Clara and took his hand. Her small, warm fingers gripped his cold, blood-stained palm tightly.
Suddenly, a woman's voice crackled over the mercenary's fallen radio headset, sharp and aristocratic.

""Team leader, report. Is the girl dead? Answer me, or the entire board will face ruin by morning.""
Julian recognized that voice instantly. It belonged to his own mother.
