Chapter 14 - The Final Ledger

Julian stood up immediately, placing Evelyn and Lily behind him as the black helicopter touched down gracefully on the gravel pad at the edge of the rose garden. Marcus stepped out from the estate's side entrance, drawing his sidearm, while two private guards stationed at the perimeter moved into defensive positions.
The rotor wash flattened the crimson rose bushes, whipping Eleanor’s coat around her knees.
The aircraft's cabin door slid open. A tall, distinguished elderly man stepped down onto the landing skids. He wore an immaculate three-piece charcoal suit, leaning on a silver-topped cane, his sharp blue eyes taking in the scene with calm, detached authority.
Julian felt a chill run down his spine. It was Lord Alistair Sterling—Evelyn’s estranged father and the sovereign chairman of the Sterling Maritime Trust, an ancient European financial dynasty that had remained entirely silent during the corporate war between Julian and his mother.
""Stand down, Marcus,"" Julian commanded quietly, sensing no immediate mercenary threat, but remaining acutely aware of the old man's power.
Alistair walked slowly up the stone pathway, his gaze lingering on Evelyn's face for a long, heavy moment before shifting to Lily, who peeked curiously from behind Julian's leg.
""You survived, Evelyn,"" Alistair said, his voice deep, aristocratic, and resonant. ""Four years living like a common refugee on the edge of the continent... all to escape a corporate board.""
""I was escaping you, Father,"" Evelyn said coldly, standing tall beside Julian despite the brace on her leg. ""You knew Victoria Vance was embezzling from the maritime joint ventures. You let the yacht sail knowing the fuel lines were compromised.""
Alistair stopped ten paces away, his expression unreadable. ""I did not know the extent of Victoria’s madness. But I knew she was dangerous. And I knew that as long as you were tied to the Vance name, neither you nor your child would ever truly be safe.""
The old man reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique leather-bound ledger, embossed with the Sterling family seal in pure platinum.
""What is that?"" Julian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
""This is the ledger of the Sterling-Vance Union,"" Alistair said, holding it out toward Julian. ""Fifty-one percent of the maritime supply lines in the Western hemisphere. It was placed in an irrevocable blind trust upon the birth of your daughter, Mia Julianne Vance.""
Alistair looked down at Lily with an emotion that almost resembled pride. ""Your mother and Arthur thought they were stealing a manufacturing company. They were fighting for crumbs. This little girl owns the foundation beneath their feet.""
Julian stepped forward, his eyes locked onto the old aristocrat. ""We don't want your blood money, Alistair. We came here to live in peace.""
""Peace requires defense, Julian,"" Alistair said, placing the heavy ledger into Julian’s hand. ""Victoria is in prison, yes. But the people who financed her treason—the sovereign syndicates who shorted Vance Global stock before the tragedy—they are still out there. And they have just realized that the true heir to the Sterling fortune is alive.""

Suddenly, the helicopter's co-pilot shouted from the cockpit, pointing toward the coastal highway below.
A convoy of five dark, unmarked off-road vehicles was rapidly ascending the winding mountain path toward the villa, their headlights blazing through the evening twilight.
