Chapter 10 - Healing in the Garden
Autumn gradually surrendered to early winter. Crisp frost coated the lawn in the mornings, and the fallen leaves turned to rich, dark compost beneath the soil.
At Evelyn’s bungalow, life settled into a tranquil, unhurried cadence. Julian visited every evening after leaving his studio. Together, they transformed the overgrown backyard into a safe haven. Julian built a sturdy wooden swing set for Lily, painting the cedar beams a bright forest green, while Evelyn planted winter pansies and hardy herbs in raised cedar boxes along the back fence.
One Saturday afternoon, Evelyn watched from the kitchen window as Julian taught Lily how to measure wood boards using a tape measure and a carpenter’s pencil. Lily was giggling, wearing a pair of oversized safety goggles that kept sliding down her button nose.
Julian walked into the kitchen to wash sawdust from his hands.
"She's laughing again, Julian," Evelyn said softly, pouring hot apple cider into two ceramic mugs. "For weeks after the wedding, she would wake up at night checking the window locks."
Julian dried his hands on a kitchen towel and took a mug. "She's resilient, Mom. But she needed to know she was safe. We all did."
Evelyn touched his forearm gently. "And what about you, son? You spent years preparing for a marriage, building a home meant for two. Don't let Clara's deceit harden your heart to the world."
Julian looked out at Lily swinging on the cedar swing, her laughter floating through the clear afternoon air.
"My heart isn't hard, Mom," Julian said honestly, a genuine smile touching his lips. "For the first time in years, my life feels clean. I was chasing a facade—the perfect business alliance, the glittering partner, the approval of social circles that didn't care about us. Clara showed me what I didn't want. You and Lily showed me what actually matters."
