Chapter 14 - The Yellow Bow

The annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Vance household was an affair of warmth, loud laughter, and delicious abundance.
The dining room table in Julian’s renovated home was loaded with roast turkey, sage stuffing, sweet potato mash, and fresh cranberry pies. Evelyn sat at one head of the table, wearing her navy dress with the silver forget-me-nots, the sapphire brooch pinned proudly over her heart. Arthur Pendelton and Teresa Ruiz sat opposite each other, debating harbor architectural styles, while Sofia and Lily traded stories about their third-grade science fair projects.
Before carving the turkey, Julian stood up and tapped his water glass with a fork, calling the table to order.
"I won't give a long speech," Julian said, looking around at the circle of faces that had stood by his family through their darkest trial. "A year ago, I thought success meant building towering glass skyscrapers and joining elite social circles. I was blind to the cruelty that can hide behind expensive smiles."
He looked down at Lily, who was beaming up at him, wearing a fresh yellow ribbon tied neatly into her blonde hair.
"A year ago, the bravest person in this room was five years old," Julian continued, his voice thick with emotion. "She taught all of us that the truth doesn't need a loudspeaker, and that love isn't something you buy or barter. It's something you protect. To courage, to family, and to the truth."
"To the truth," the table echoed in unison, raising their glasses.

Lily puffed out her chest with immense pride, leaning over to whisper loudly to Sofia: "That's me! He’s talking about me!"
The entire room burst into laughter. Evelyn wiped a tear of pure joy from her eye, reaching out to squeeze Lily’s small hand.
