Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Court
Three days later, the county municipal courthouse opened its oak doors for a preliminary emergency injunction hearing.
The gallery was packed with reporters, local business figures, and curious onlookers. Clara Sterling sat at the defense table beside her high-priced defense attorney, wearing a severe black suit with oversized dark sunglasses that she only removed when the judge entered. Her face was pale, tight, and stripped of the charming glow that had once captivated society columns.
Julian and Arthur Pendelton sat at the plaintiff's table. Evelyn had chosen to attend, sitting beside Julian in a simple, elegant dark gray wool dress, her posture upright and calm.
Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to Julian, known across the county for her stern, no-nonsense rulings—adjusted her bifocals and read through the affidavits.
"Mr. Sterling’s counsel has submitted an objection to the admission of the reception footage," Judge Vance stated, looking down from the bench. "Claiming invasion of privacy and lack of consent."
Arthur stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, the camera in question was installed openly for commercial event documentation by the contracted wedding videography team. Furthermore, the footage captures physical battery and criminal property damage under state penal code section 242. There is no expectation of privacy when committing assault."
Judge Vance nodded once. "Objection overruled. The footage stands."
The judge then turned her piercing gaze toward Clara.
"Ms. Sterling, the court has reviewed the deposition of banquet staff member Teresa Ruiz, the financial forensics regarding property deed filings, and the security footage. Your behavior represents a systematic pattern of harassment, deceit, and physical intimidation."
Clara’s lawyer whispered frantically in her ear, but Clara stared forward, her lips trembling with silent, suppressed rage.
"Effective immediately," Judge Vance declared, banging her gavel with a resounding crack, "a five-year permanent restraining order is entered against Clara Sterling and Marcus Sterling. You are forbidden from coming within five hundred yards of Evelyn Vance, Lily Vance, and Julian Vance, their residences, workplaces, and schools. Furthermore, the evidence of deed forgery is formally referred to the District Attorney for criminal indictment."

The gavel struck again. Clara covered her face with both hands, sinking into her chair as flashbulbs exploded across the gallery barrier.
Julian turned to his mother. Evelyn let out a long, quiet breath, reached over, and squeezed his hand. The weight that had crushed her chest for months had finally lifted.
