Chapter 8 - Lily's Quiet Bravery

While the adults maneuvered through legal filings and boardroom politics, Lily returned to St. Jude’s Elementary School on Monday morning.
Julian insisted on driving her himself. He held her small backpack in one hand and her little fingers in the other as they walked up the brick path to the front entrance. Lily was uncharacteristically quiet, her yellow bow neatly tied, her sneakers scuffing the fallen maple leaves.
"Uncle Julian?" she asked, stopping beside a stone bench near the entrance.
Julian knelt down to eye level with her. "What's on your mind, bug?"
"At school, Tommy said his mom told him Aunt Clara was famous and that my grandma was bad," Lily whispered, looking down at her shoes. "He said we ruined a pretty party."
Julian felt a sharp ache in his heart. The poison of social gossip had trickled down even into second-grade classrooms. He gently cupped Lily’s small chin, lifting her gaze until her hazel eyes met his.
"Lily, do you remember why you brought that little flash drive to the DJ?" Julian asked gently.
"Because Grandma was crying, and her dress was torn," Lily replied softly. "And Clara lied."
"Exactly," Julian said, his voice warm and steady. "Bravery doesn't always look pretty, sweetheart. Sometimes, doing what is right makes selfish people angry because they were caught hiding in the dark. You protected someone you love. Never let anyone make you feel small for telling the truth."
Lily took a deep breath, the tension leaving her narrow shoulders. She nodded once, firm and resolute. "Okay."
"And if Tommy or anyone else says something unkind," Julian added with a wink, "you tell Mrs. Higgins, and you remember that your grandma has the sweetest, bravest granddaughter in the world."
Lily threw her arms around Julian's neck, squeezing him tight. "I love you, Uncle Julian."

"I love you more, bug. Have a great day."
As Lily skipped through the double glass doors, her backpack bouncing lightly, Julian watched until she disappeared into the bright, cheerful hallway. He resolved then and there that he would create a world where she would never have to be afraid of speaking the truth.
