Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Echo

The master lowered his stance until his center of gravity melted into the stone pavers, his teal silk rustling against the morning sea breeze. Master Shen had traveled across oceans to escape the shadows of his former academy, seeking quiet anonymity along the edge of Sydney Harbour. Yet every disciplined movement of his routine felt like an empty ritual without an heir, a hollow echo against the water. He straightened slowly, drawing the crisp salt air deep into his lungs, only to realize the tiny boy in the slate-blue shirt was still standing there, unmoving, staring up at him with unblinking brown eyes.

The toddler did not scurry away like most children when approached by a stern adult. Instead, he reached out with sticky fingers, touching the smooth fabric of Shen’s sleeve. A sudden, deep hush seemed to settle over the open boardwalk. Before Shen could speak, a young woman sprinted toward them from the steps near the Opera House, her breath ragged, clutching an empty stroller and scanning the crowd with sheer terror in her eyes. As her gaze collided with Shen’s, she froze—not in relief, but in recognizable shock.
