Chapter 13 - The Encirclement

The cold night air grew dangerously still before the storm broke, carrying the unmistakable scent of damp earth and approaching danger. Shen stood up silently, peering through the bunker opening to see flashlights flickering through the dense pine trees below. Victor Kang had not given up; he had brought every available man to sweep the peninsula, determined to recover the jade talisman and eliminate the remaining ties to Julian’s lineage before dawn. The light beams swept closer, illuminating the bunker's rusted iron doorway.
Shen turned back to Elena, kneeling before her and placing his own half of the jade talisman into her trembling hand. He told her to stay inside the bunker until sunrise, no matter what sounds came from the forest outside. Elena grabbed his wrist, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, begging him not to face them alone in the dark. Shen offered her a calm, resolute smile—the first genuine smile she had seen from him—before turning back toward the rain-swept woods, his teal silk blending into the midnight shadows.
