Chapter 2 - The Crimson Thread

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving as she gripped the leather strap of her purse. She recognized the intricate gold crest embroidered on Shen’s collar; it was an emblem she had only seen once before, tucked inside the private letters of her late father. She hurried forward and scooped up little Leo, pressing the toddler against her shoulder while trying to steady her trembling hands. Leo giggled softly, pointing his little fist back at the martial artist as if proud of the lesson he had just shared.

Shen dipped his head in polite deference, intending to step away and maintain his quiet solitude. Yet Elena stepped directly into his path, her voice tight and trembling with an emotion that tore through the casual morning air. She pulled a worn silver pendant from under her collar, revealing a matched carved jade medallion that slotted identically into the empty setting on Shen’s own sash. ""You're him,"" she whispered, tears rimming her eyelids. ""My father died saying someone would come to settle the ledger, but I never believed him until now.""
