Chapter 10 - The Ambush at the Pier

The ferry nudged against the wooden pilings of the wharf with a heavy groan, its hydraulic ramps clattering down onto the concrete dock. Most of the passengers hurried off into the drizzle, but Shen remained on the upper deck, drawing every watchful eye toward his vivid teal uniform. As expected, four men detached themselves from the shadows of the ticket barriers, their hands buried deep within their coats as they formed a closing perimeter around the gangway.
Shen waited until the last civilian cleared the ramp before stepping down onto the slick timber boards. He didn't run; he advanced steadily toward the lead enforcer, his movements hypnotic, fluid, and deliberate. When the first man lunged forward with a collapsible baton, Shen caught the wrist mid-strike, pivoting with the momentum to throw the man over the low railing directly into the frigid harbor water below. But before he could recover his stance, an electric taser dart struck his right shoulder, sending thousands of volts coursing through his muscles.
