Chapter 12 - Morning Over Haven Ridge

The dawn did not break with sunlight; it emerged as a slow, pearlescent grey filtering through the lingering autumn mist. By 7:00 AM, the rain had reduced to a gentle drizzle, and the catastrophic rumble of the hills had fallen silent.

The gravel yard behind Haven Ridge Animal Shelter looked like a disaster staging area. Two county fire rescue trucks and an amphibious rescue vehicle sat with their diesel engines idling, their amber warning lights casting a warm glow over the muddy ground. Paramedics wrapped warm wool blankets around Lucas, Thomas, and Clara as shelter volunteers—who had hiked in across the washed-out access road on foot—transferred the evacuated dogs into temporary transport vans.

Not a single animal had been lost.

Pip sat curled inside the warm folds of Lucas’s dry blanket, shivering occasionally, but ravenously devouring pieces of cooked chicken Clara had brought from the emergency response kit. Every few seconds, the dog would pause, lick Lucas's thumb, and look across the tailboard of the rescue truck at Thomas.

""The county engineer says the building can be salvaged,"" Clara said, walking over with two steaming paper cups of black coffee. She handed one to Lucas and the other to Thomas. ""The kennel wing held. If you two hadn't shut that propane main, the entire complex would have leveled when the auxiliary generator kicked on at 4:00 AM.""

Deputy Miller walked over, his mud-splattered clipboard tucked under his arm. He looked down at Pip, a rare, soft smile breaking through his tired face. ""I spoke to the state magistrate in Greene County thirty minutes ago, Thomas.""

Thomas looked up slowly, his eyes guarded, bracing for bad news. ""And?""

""The emergency intake hold on Sarah's property has been cleared,"" Miller stated, tapping his pen against the form. ""The vehicle has been recovered from the creek bed. Under Virginia emergency statutes, when an owner passes without a will, companion animals transfer directly to next-of-kin upon verified petition.""

Miller looked between Thomas and Lucas. ""Which leaves us with a legal question. Sarah had no registered spouse. Her only documented legal next-of-kin is her brother, Lucas. But Thomas was listed on her county kennel license as emergency contact.""

A heavy quiet settled between the two men over the hum of the fire truck engines.
