Chapter 8 - The Wall of Mud

The sound was unlike anything Lucas had ever heard—a deep, subterranean groan that vibrated through the shelter's concrete foundation, followed by the terrifying crack of century-old oaks snapping like matchsticks.
""Everyone, move to the east wing!"" Clara shouted, her professional composure instantly pivoting to crisis survival. ""The east wall is reinforced brick!""
The adoption hall erupted into bedlam. Dogs began howling in primal terror, sensing the earth shifting beneath their paws. Lucas scooped Pip back into his jacket pocket, then pulled Thomas to his feet. The older man winced, his bruised legs barely able to support his weight, but fear gave him sudden momentum.
""Take the big dogs!"" Lucas instructed the few stranded staff members. ""Unclip them and herd them through the fire corridor!""
Lucas grabbed the leashes of the two largest hounds while Thomas dragged a cage of kittens toward the reinforced interior hallway. Just as the last animal crossed the threshold, the north wall of the adoption hall buckled with an explosive roar.
Tons of saturated mud, river stones, and shattered tree trunks smashed through the wide plate-glass windows where Lucas had sat hours earlier. The wave of earth demolished the plastic chairs, crushed the reception counter into splinters, and slammed into the heavy steel fire door that separated the kennels, bending the metal inward like tin foil.
A blast of cold, muddy air blew the lanterns off the tables, plunging the corridor into near-total darkness.
Pip was shivering violently against Lucas’s chest, his tiny nose buried deep under Lucas’s collar. Lucas pressed his back against the brick wall of the hallway, his heart hammering against his ribs as dust and the pungent stench of raw earth filled the air.
""Is everyone accounted for?"" Deputy Miller’s voice echoed through the dark, illuminated by the bobbing beam of a high-powered flashlight.
""We’re all here!"" Clara called back from the doorway of the staff breakroom. ""All animals accounted for! But the front lobby is completely filled with mud. We're trapped inside.""

""Not just trapped,"" Miller said, his flashlight beam illuminating a steady stream of water beginning to seep under the breakroom doors from the cracked drywall. ""The retaining wall on the hillside took out the main propane tank. Smell that?""
Lucas inhaled, and a cold shock went through him. The distinct, nauseating smell of rotten eggs hung thick in the stagnant air.
