Chapter 7 - Secrets in the Rain

The adoption hall was dim, illuminated only by battery-powered emergency lanterns that threw long, dancing shadows across the high ceiling. Outside, the rain continued its relentless assault, but inside, the air was warm with the collective breath of twenty quieted animals. Pip lay curled tightly between Lucas’s crossed legs, refusing to move even when offered a bowl of soft food.
Thomas sat propped against the shelter’s reception desk, a clean towel wrapped around his shivering shoulders. Deputy Miller had patched Thomas's torn palms with gauze from the first-aid kit before heading out to check the perimeter sandbags.
""She called me three months ago,"" Thomas began, his voice hoarse and hollow. ""I’m not her biological father, Lucas. I was married to your mother before you were born. Long before your father entered the picture. When Sarah found my letters in your mother's attic, she tracked me down in Virginia.""
Lucas stared at the older man, the revelation settling heavily into his chest like lead. His mother had taken many secrets to her grave, but this was a fault line he had never anticipated. ""Why didn't she tell me?""
""Because she was ashamed,"" Thomas said, tears cutting clear tracks through the grime on his cheeks. ""Ashamed of how she left you. She wanted to build something of her own first. She bought a small plot out past the reservoir, started raising rescues. That little Chihuahua was the first one she pulled from a puppy mill bust in Greene County. She called him Pip because he was smaller than an apple seed.""
Thomas looked down at his bandaged hands. ""When the rain started yesterday afternoon, the creek rose four feet in twenty minutes. I told her to leave the kennels and get to my truck on the ridge. But she went back for the stray litter in the shed. When she was driving Pip out... the culvert simply collapsed under her tires. The vehicle rolled into the ravine.""
Lucas reached down, his thumb smoothing over Pip’s soft fawn forehead. ""How did he survive?""
""Sarah threw him through the broken rear window onto the high embankment before the cab went under,"" Thomas choked on the words, covering his face with his hands. ""I found him barking on the ridge this morning, but animal control was already there. When I tried to grab him, he bolted into the brush, terrified. They swept him up and brought him here while I was stuck answering questions for the state police.""
Clara, sitting on an overturned bucket nearby, wiped a tear from her cheek. ""He wasn't running away from you, Thomas. He was running for help.""
""And now she's gone,"" Thomas whispered into the dim room. ""And I don't have a damn thing left.""
May you like
""That's not true,"" Lucas said quietly, looking Thomas directly in the eyes. ""You have him. And you have me.""
Before Thomas could respond, the emergency radio on the front desk crackled with a burst of static, followed by Deputy Miller’s urgent voice: ""Clara! Lucas! Get to the north entrance! The retention pond on the hill just gave way—the whole ridge is sliding down on us!""
